Do pregnancy hormones intensify anxiety?

I have heard (i haven't had kids yet but I have wondered this same thing) that they do not. I talked to a woman who suffered from anxiety and said the hormones kind of took the place of her medication and she didn't have a big problem with anxiety during pregnancy.
