hi deerwatcher,
I don't know that much about OCD (other than watching Monk)but I too, am trying to learn. I do know some people who have it. And now I think my daughter is dealing with it. She is 19 yrs old and has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression, also ADD, but she definitely has signs of having problems with OCD. Her symptoms come and go and come out in different ways at different times. I would be curious to hear from others out there who deal with this.

Hi Ladies--
I would recommend starting with visiting the ocd foundation website at www.ocfoundation.org/ to find information and resources to learn more information on OCD.
Best of luck to you both.

deerwatcher, I agree that you should go to the OCF website. They have two tests there that will help you determine if you have OCD. They tell you what the probability is that you have it. They will send you information on the disorder, and a list of resources to help you understand and deal with it. The CD of Jeffery Schwartz was a good start for help for me. The front page article from the Summer 2004 issue of the OCD Newsletter was very helpful. It described my OCD perfectly! Someone actually understood what I was going through. I let my mother read it so she could get a better understanding. It is really hard to explain it to people. I would recommend you go to the OCD web site, and maybe request this particular editon of the newsletter.
Do you guys even understand the true meaning of OCD? For some people it may handwashing over and over again for fear of germs, counting things over and over again that have no real importance in your life or maybe you may have unwanted thoughts, thoughts of terrible things that may happen if you do not do things accordingly to your rituals. This is a terrible disease, I would welcome the idea of having to wash my hands 100+ times a day or even counting everything that I came in contact with instead of the unwanted thoughts. The truth of it all is that OCD can be very scary and make you feel as if you have no control over your own life. It is a terrible thing to have thoughts enter your brain that are not pleasant and not be able to get rid of them easily. I'm sorry, I understand all the aspects of this disease, I have had it for at least 15 years.

I know exactly what you mean, recently I mentiioned to someone that I had OCD and their reply was "you mean that thing where you wash your hands alot and want things to be really clean", I just said "yes". But I was thinking dont I wish, I think horrible things that I feel like I cant control and then feel guilty about them for years.

I'm not trying to belittle the traditional sense of OCD with washing and checking repeatedly, and the like. However, I'm getting quite convinced there is no worse mental illness than OCD obsessive thoughts only. The interesting thing is you can control it but it takes tons of practice and discipline.
I think traditional OCD is not much different than pure obsessional OCD...its just that the person created rituals that need to be broken on top of it. Its all still intrusive thoughts that are upsetting. I do agree that it is an absolutely dreadful disease and does require a lot of practice and discipline to get it under control.
