Leah~
I use to love the button candy! My sisters and I use to stick them on our ears and wear them as earrings.
I also miss the drive-in movies. It was so much fun watching movies outdoors with the people and the noise.
Anyone get lonely for the past?
What great memories you all have shared. It reminds me of times spent with my great grandpa and him telling stories about how things were when he was growing up. I was born in 1972....I remember dirt roads, only one traffic light in the whole town! Driving up to gas stations and someone coming over to ask "how much?"...."filler up"....Mom would say. Riding without a seatbelt, riding in the back of a truck...when it wasn't against the law. Buying cigarrettes for my Mom. She told me yrs. ago her Docotor would come in the room w/ a cigarette in his mouth and say what seems to be wrong with you today? She told me how my great Aunt while in LABOR w/ twins was smoking and didn't seem to be in much pain...like she was(when pregnant).
I remember going to the drive in and who ever was driving(mom, grandma can't remember?). Would say to the little ones "slump down...so they will think your younger" You didn't have to pay if you were a certain age....I know...lying..LOL
Anyone remember the ice cream trucks that would go around the neighbor hood? Going trick or treating and actually getting homemade goodies...yum!
Thanks for letting me go down memory lane....

Hi Karen,
My baby sister was born in 1975. I am 15 years older than she, my sister under me is 13 years older than the baby. When you wrote about slump down in the car seat, so they would think you were younger. It reminded me of how we dress my sister who is under me, up so we could sneak her into the hospital, to see the new baby. We had to make her up to look sixteen. We did pass her off as sixteen, we put high heels on her,and a long coat, so it would hide the high heels.
Yes, I remember the dirt roads. I remember when the rain would come and there would be holes in the dirt road, we would go to the back of the school bus, so we could go up high when the bus went into the hole, and back up. Some of the holes were so big, when it rain, it was a swimming pool for us.
The gas stations, back then would put gas in your car, check your oil, tires, and wash your windshields. They also gave away free stuff. Stores and some gas stations, would give out green stamps, you would save them, then you could buy something.
The town I live in now, had only one stop light when I was growing up. Now we have the seven, and it is a small town.
Where I live, the ice cream truck stills come. I must say, the prices are a lot higher.
I used to go to the store, and get a newspaper, back then, they were not in machines. They were on the counter at the store, and you would put the money for the paper in a cigar box.
The Junior High School, I went to have a cafe across the street from it, it was with the drug store, we would meet there after school. They had a jukebox on the tables, you put money in it, and pick the song you wanted to hear.
Back then they also use a paddle on you at school. I remember some of the children who got the paddle, than their Mom would come to the school, and get onto the teachers. The Mom's would back the male teachers into a corner, and jump all over them. Also back then, if a neighbor told on you, you got spanked. Yet, neighbors look out for one another, you didn't have to worry about locking your house up, or your car, it was a lot safer.
We play games back then, it was hop-scotch, mother, may I, ~one, two, three, red light. Also who would you like to do this to. It was were you kiss one, hug one, and slap one. Now the kiss was on the cheek, there was also spin the bottle. We also though we could dig in the ground, and go to China. Children play outside a lot back then. It is not safe for children today.
For Halloween, our parents made our outfit, fix the hair, and use make- up on you. That was the only time, you could use make-up.

Man, these are great! I'm from a small town in Louisiana so life there stayed simpler for longer. Let me see if I can think of a few flashbacks that haven't been mentioned yet. I remember playing kick-the-can and using flashlights to play hide-&-seek at night, taking our baths and dressing in our pjs before going to the drive-in so my parents could just put us in bed when we got home. I remember watching the movie in sleeping bags on the top of the station wagon. lol How about when the first Icee machine was installed at the "Corner Grocer." I remember my mom shopping at the butcher shop, the dry goods store, catching our own fish and growing our own vegetables, the milk man who brought the milk, eggs, and ice cream to the house and picked up the GLASS milk jugs. Oh My Gosh!!! I remember my parents and neighbors "taking things out in trade" like, "If you help me harvest my vegetables, I'll give you a basketfull," and "I'll watch your kids this Saturday if you'll watch mine next Saturday." I remember picking berries and coming home with as many in my tummy as in the bucket, walking barefoot, sleeping in the hall underneath the attic fan on hot summer nights, and best of all homemade ice cream on Sunday afternoons at Grandmommy's house.
Thanks for the memories,

Yep I remember when we lived in a smaller town for a short while, and we would walk across our road to an apple orchard, and just pick as many apples as we wanted to. During that ime we also got milk ,yogurt, cottage cheese, etc from the milk man. I know this is silly, but for fun in the summer, in the evenings, my friends, and I would stand in the yard, and let mosquitoes bite us on our arms, we would let them drink up until they were full, then we would smash them. It seems pretty crazy during this day, and age!!!! What can I say, we were kids!!!!
