I have been in therapy for almost 20 years and I am on 5 different meds. I get trapped in the past alot longing to find the peace of the present. I am a single man and have no children just my family. Every day seems to be the same old struggle to get out of bed and figure out what I need to do to get ahead in life and get out of this depression. I dont have any energy because I cant stop thinking of the people who have persecuted me for being a depressed person and vise versa. Can somebody talk some sense to me? Thankyou...

Hi Ceejaay!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been struggling with this for such a long time. It sounds like you know what you need to do to help yourself feel better (i.e., not dwell on the past and instead focus on the present--I love the phrase you use, "find the peace of the present"), but have trouble actually doing it. It can be really difficult not to focus on bad things that have happened in the past! Have you started the program? If not, I strongly encourage you to. It contains a LOT of very helpful strategies you can use to help yourself stay focused on the positive and "live in the moment."

Here's something you might try: Challenge yourself to say "Thank you" at least 10 (or 15, or 20) times each day. Find things to be thankful for in every situation. You might thank a waitress for drawing a smiley face on your bill in a restaurant, or thank a bus driver for wishing you a nice day, or just silently thank the world in general for a particularly lovely day. Be sure that you actually mean it, of course! Finding so many things to be thankful for may help you see things in a more positive light, and if you actively seek things to thank people for, you'll be more focused on your present situation.

This is probably something that has been suggested a million times before, but it's certainly worth considering. At the very least, it might bring a smile to the people you thank!

Good luck to you!!

Omaha gave you some good advice... I feel so bad that you're feeling this way!

You say you're on 5 different medications - now if you're still feeling this way, I have to wonder what your medications are doing for you? Would it be an idea to see a different psychiatrist and have him/her review your meds?

I believe some medications help and some don't. I too agree with Arwen I would look into finding a doctor that can recommend less pills with more good results...I also think you need to let go of the past. I know we all have made mistakes in our lives in the past but there is no time to dwell on them. Now is the time to do. Doer's get more accomplished and you can heal and go back to living a normal....I will pray for you to have a full recovery and rid yourself of your depression.
