I Read a Book about Self-Talk

Post by poetrob » Sat Jan 22, 2011 11:07 am

I read a book about self-talk several years ago. I don't know if suggesting books is allowed so
I won't give the title or author.

Something I learned about self-talk is to ask Who told me about negative thoughts.
When I think negatively about myself, ask who told me.

It is easy to self-talk ourselves in to being failures or negative thinkers. Don't
ask me how I know.

I used to struggle with a self-esteem problem and most of it had to do with my
self-talk. This book was difficult to read because it outlined just how we damage
ourselves with our self-talk. Negative self-talk.

If we can talk ourselves in to being failures or negative thinkers, we can talk ourselves
in to being successes and positive thinkers.

The journaling was designed to show me the horrible things I say to myself. It can be
scary to realize the extent of our negative thinking. I didn't keep that journal after
finishing that book. I remember it well though.

My favorite word was "can't" or I just said things about myself that gave new definition to " Negative".

I can't drive a car. Who told me?
I can't work. Who told me?
No one would be crazy enough to date me. Who told me?
I'm not good enough, smart enough etc. Who told me?

You can see how the Who told me thing works.

When you write down your negative thoughts, try the Who told me question.
I'm using it again for this.

The original author wrote:

That kind of thought has always been back there in the background for me. Your suggestion about the Who told me question is a good one and has brought it to the fore.

Well, today, I am coming to realize and accept that I am indeed good and smart enough to do the things that I want and need to do. There's always going to be someone smarter, richer etc. than me, but this is the hand I was dealt and I can always improve.

Have a positive day.
