Help!....please, needs some advice

Post by Racer23 » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:51 pm

Im having trouble staying positive, for those that havent read this about me, I am going on a trip with a class to Costa Rica in a week and Im very anxious about it. as the trip is getting closer I am going from excited to nervous. not really about the trip but the initial getting going to the airport and all that. my anxiety gets so bad it hurts and I throw up and im scared about that happening. for the last two weeks ive done decent with breathing and keeping myself relativly calm but my anxiousness is rising. I just the other day was prescribed a form of Xanax to ONLY be taking when I really really need it, cuz i felt i needed a back up plan if i freak out on the way there. but now I have these meds and im afraid they wont work, my friend is trying to tell me they are prescription sedatives, they will work. I guess my biggest problem right now is the anxiety is stepping up a level because of this trip and im having trouble staying positive and could use some words from some people....

Hi!
When I get into the space that it sounds you are, I really have to take it back to basics - i.e. breathing. I work on slowing it down, focus on making each breath, slow/long and smooth and I talk myself through it with counting or words. I find this helps me to get out my "imagined future" and to stay in the present with what's happening now. For me, breathing is the anchor. Also, I'd like to suggest going over Session 2 again (and again and again). Make the steps yours. I worked through my panic attacks on my own before I got this program and the steps that they suggest are EXACTLY how I did it and they WORK. There isn't anything out there that can fix it so you never feel those yeechy feeling again (it's part of being a human being) but there are things YOU CAN do to stop it from controlling you, YOU CAN stop it from going from a 3 to a 27 in intensity. I'll bet this isn't the 1st time you've felt like this, you made it through that right? You're still here, right? YOU CAN do this. And good for you, you've given yourself a backup with the meds (Yes, they will work) until you can do it on your own and you will do this on your own. You will get there. Like everything else, it's a step at a time.

self talk! work the six steps... you need to focus on something else besides the what if thoughts, so focus on the six steps:

1)ACCEPT ~ recognize something is bother you

2) PERMISSION ~ know its anxiety and it sucks but you can live throught it, you have and you will

3) BREATH ~ for some reson short/fast breaths work better for me. breath in a way that makes you feel good.

4) INNER DIALOGUE ~ talk to your self positive, it will pass nothing bad is going to happen, its just your mind playing tricks.... its not real, its only anxiety

5) DISTRACT ~ keep thinking about the steps over and over again if you cant find something else to focus on or find an object and focus on it, the color, shape, any detail etc. (i have been told to focus on an object before but cant do it yet lol)
Positive talking myself throught it is what is helping.

6) LET TIME PASS ~ this is my fav! you feel weird and completly lost beyond space but you dont look weird! think about whats bothering you and replace with a positive thougth that can help you let go of the negative thinking...

SELF TALK is my advice to you + feel good that if all fails you have plan B so no matter what you will be all good!

you will be OKEY :-)
