HI Im really debating if I should take ADs i am week 5 of 24/7 anxiety and year 12 of panic attacks I have been trying to work through this on my own but im gettin tired and need help the only thing is i don't want to be on ADs for ever is it possible to be on them for like a couple of months without anxiety coming back it seems like everyone has to go back on them when they get off. Any type of feedback would be nice....
ADs are normally taken for longer periods like 1-2 years or more. If you feel better you can always taper off the meds and see how it goes. However, most Doctors would recommend staying on the meds till you have a chance to work through your stressors and start feeling better long term. Like most of us, you don't want to be on meds, but you also need to consider the stresses on your body of being anxious all the time. You could start the ADs a lower dosage and see how it goes. I still have anxiety attacks that last for weeks. I started on Remeron since it makes you sleepy which helps at night. You may need to try 2-3 ADs till you find one that works.
I took AD's 9 yrs ago after my father passed away I was on them (along w/an anxiety pill) for a few months and got off of them. I hated how I felt on the AD's I was never really happy or really sad, no sex drive and I had night sweats with them. After I got off of them I also cut down on the anxiety pills from 3 a day to none and only used the anxiety pills when needed after that. My depression at the time was directly related to losing my dad so for me working through the grief etc was how I really overcame it. I also discussed this w/my dr and told her I wanted to ween myself off of the medications and she supported my decision talk to your Dr and tell him you are doing this program etc. I had that same discussion last week w/my Dr and she supports it but did say if I ever felt like the program wasn't working and I wanted to try AD's to tell her and she'd put me on one. Luckily I've been able to pull myself up from the depression so now I'm just dealing with the anxiety and panic attacks.
Living with anxiety is no way to live. I did not want to take an AD for years, but I tried it (Lexapro 10mg) and it has worked wonders, I have no anxiety and I feel great. I have been on it for 11 months and I will continue to stay on them as long as they make me feel well. Anxiety is often caused by a chemical imbalance and the meds can help you get your life back.
