I am on session 3 about positive self talk, and one thing I have noticed is most of the time I seem to be on autopilot, I am not thinking anything in particular, yet I feel close to tears and can't figure out why as there are no thoughts going through my head, any thoughts I am having must be subconcious, so if they are subconcious how do I challenge these thoughts?

You could start by asking yourself why you feel like crying. Get out your journal and ask yourself this question and just start writing the first thing that comes to your mind- no matter how strange it may be. I've found that sometimes it may not be something you were thinking the day before, but something that may have come up a few days or even weeks ago that is still lingering. I also found that when I at one time felt like I was on auto pilot and had no thoughts, I had actually been repressing a lot of my thoughts and had been refusing to acknowledge them. When you have a feeling of being close to tears something is bothering you, and asking yourself questions is a good way to get some answers but- you have to give yourself the freedom to answer honestly without editing.

i just want to agree with Mary Wargo and encourage you with the positive replacement... sometimes those thoughts mean absolutely nothing... they are just passing through... let them pass and float away like a gentle cloud... we cannot always control what comes into our minds, but we CAN choose what we let stay in there... some are not worth the time we spend wondering what the heck we are supposed to do with them... just let them go... only allow positive, encouraging, empowering self talk to hold focus for you... it gets easier as you train your brain to think on the good... "whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy... think on THESE things"... good luck and keep us posted...
much LOVE,
kj

Hello dj417002,

I agree with Mary on asking ques. and writing in a journal. I have also found with depression that sometimes there is no reason if you have a chemical imbalance. It could be something you ate or drank.
Also, if you drink alcoholic beverages you will feel depressed. The reason I say this is because when I am down or on autopilot sometimes I want a drink. Lately the only thing it does is stimulate me where I can't sleep and then the next day, I am teary about everything.
