Did i make a big mistake??

I just accepted a job with Denver Police Department and there victims assistant unit. Basically I go to the scene of every crime on my shift and help the police and deal with victims and there families. Something I really want to do!! The only thing is during the orientation I got really anxious when they talked about things we are going to see like dead bodies, blood, decomposition etc. Did I make a mistake in taking this job? I really want it more than anything but my biggest fear is freaking out at a scene and not being able to handle it, or getting post traumatic stress syndrome that would make my anxiety and depression worse! Does anyone have any thoughts?

Only you can decide if this is the right type of career for you. I would pro/con it and see what about it you feel is for you. What are the reasons why you want the job? If you feel it causes too much anxiety, well you won't be the first person. Very few people could handle a job like that, with or without anxiety, it's going to be stressful!

You just have to be honest with yourself about your reasons for taking this kind of job, and if you can really handle it or not given your anxiety situation.

I know I once called a family friend to find out about a social worker type of job, and when she told me the lurid details about the case work involving child sexual abuse - I knew I couldn't handle it, and said "no thanks!" It's simply a personal decision that only you can make.

If you already are struggling with severe anxiety, then I can't imagine a position like that is going to be good for you. It depends on what your life purpose is. If you feel this is your calling, then you'll just have to weigh the pros and cons. Hope this helps ...
