Have a question for any one out there. Can acid reflex/ GERD cause chest pain? Recently prior to this episode, I had a full cardiac run down because I was having palipitations. The cardiologist said my heart was fine. He perscribed Lopressor ( beta blocker ) and ever since the palpitations have subsided.
However, I was told that beta blockers can block all receptors including digestive system. I take Nexium 40 once a day and was just bumped up to twice a day this week by my Primary Care Doc.
Can you tell me if any one ever gets chest pain from Acid Reflex and if so, can you please share your secrets to getting rid of it?
Frankly speaking it's scaring the pants off of me!
Thanks!
Kim
Chest Pain from Acid Reflex/GERD
Yes, Kim, chest pain can come from acid reflux. I have LPR, which is reflux that affects the larynx. A couple of years ago I was out dining with my wife and I had chicken in a heavy tomato sauce. (Tomato products are not good for people with reflux.) Almost three hours later I ended up in the ER with chest pains. My heart was fine, and the drs said it was the reflux brought on by the dinner.
Questions: If your heart is fine why did the cardiologist put you on Lopressor? You said your primary put you on Nexium 40 twice a day. (I am on that same regimen.) Does your primary know about the Lopressor? Does the cardio know about the Nexium? I would talk to both of them about their prescribed drugs, and your concern (which is very valid.)
In addition to the Nexium 40 twice daily, I take Tagemet (up to 2x/day if needed). I have been told, read, and learned from my own body that sometimes a person's reflux condition needs a PPI like Nexium AND and over-the-counter anti-acid.
I know you want to get rid of the chest pains ASAP. You might want to try an anti-acid like Tagamet or Tums, Zantac, etc. BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND CONSULTING WITH BOTH MDs FIRST. Especially since you are on a beta blocker. Kim, everything is body chemistry in terms of meds. That's why some people are allergic to some meds and others are not, or why one med works for some and not for others.

Hi Kim, I agree with Charlie. Acid reflux can definately cause chest pain. I few months ago my 12 year old son was having chest pains to the point he was in tears. So I took him to the ER. But found out in during the process that after we had eaten, he went directly to the bedroom and was laying down watching tv. So everything ended up being from him eating a big meal and laying down right after! And he is only 12!!
I also have a hiatal hernia which means I have to eat small meals and watch my diet or up it goes and pushes on the bottom of my heart and kicks off the pvcs! (heart palpitations) I too have had a few cardiac workup and everything is fine except for the skipped beats I get. Sometimes they are irrated by meals and sometimes not. Hope this helps! Take care.

Hey Kim Doc!!!!
I am happy to hear that you were finally been given a good bill of health regarding your heart.
You know I was having heart paps almost every single day and when the cardologist put me on metropol(spelling?), I was on it for about a month, because my energy level went down hill.
But I was still getting the chest pains or so called acid reflux,,,the verdict is still out on this one..but I did change my eatings habits, I am now I eat more of a gluten free diet..it is rough at times, but it is working for me...my heartburn is not as bad as before..Kim, good to see you on here!!!!!

I too get chest pains. I am on prilosec(40mg)for GERD. I did some reseach on the prilosec and it causes a drop in b-12 vitamin. And when your body gets low on b-12 it can set off anxiety and depression. It was very interesting to me. So I added a b-12 supplement to my vitamin regiment daily. I don't know if Nexium is in the same family as prilosec but it wouln't hurt to add the extra b-12 anyway.
