I'm currently on Xanax and Prozac and my husband and I have been discussing children. So in preperation for pregnancy I have been tapering down on xanax for the past 2 weeks. I have been on xanax for years now, and I would say that I am dependent on it. I have NEVER abused it, but I do think "I must have my pills with me just in case". I have found that I do want to get off the medication, but even taking a tiny bit less has caused my anxiety to rise. I'm very nervous about this process...and I'm starting to feel a bit defeated. Can anyone help?
Thank you and God bless!

I think that you will need a doctor's assistance in this.
I can only speak of my experience with anti-depressants and anti-psychotic types (Risperdal).
I did it by myself. But it took a VERY LONG TIME. I guess that in all it took about 9 months because I'd get scared and take a litle of it.
Yes, there is withdrawal that I went thru. I doubt that you can avoid that. You have to go very slowly.
At least I did . Very slowly. The withdreawal that I had was such dizzyness. And awful feeling in the stomach. And anxiety. Sleeplessness.
But I persevered. I also used some natural aids from the vitamin store to help with the withdrawal.
I got some 5-htp, some GABA. (I didn't use much of the GABA tho'.) And calcium with magnesium . And B complex vitamins. I feel that these helped me to get thru' the withdrawal. And I learned about these things here on the forum.

Although I did it by myself , I don't tell others to.
I am told that it is much better to get help from your doctor. I just never felt that the doctors were too helpful with this.

So there.
That is my experience.
I am med free now. I feel better too. I'd been on meds for years.
I'm so grateful to this program and to this forum.
This forum is a God-send for me.
Best Wishes,

DITTO - DITTO - DITTO!!!

Emilie-

Talk to your doctor about doing this properly.
First of all, drugs like xanax are supposed to be for short term use and never taken without being in some for of therapy. Prozac is a long term drug and the same holds true - therapy is a must! A good psychologist would be able to tell when you are ready to come off of them and would know how to taper you without ill effects.

If you have mastered some skills through the StressCenter.com program and feel you are ready to taper off, tell your doctor and be sure to taper very, very slowly. Pill cutters are available through your local pharmacy so you can taper at your own comfort level.

Wishing you the very best! :)
