I see very few people want to tackle Bi-Polar. It's still a mystery, even to the medical profession.
What I know about Bi-Polar is what I've observed over the years by watching members of my family.
Taking psychiatric medication kick started my mother's Bi-Polar years ago. The fact that some meds contain the ingredients to cause Bi-Polar is not news to the medical profession any more. They are now aware that certain meds can and do kick start this curse.
Having said this, I don't believe it's a mental disorder but actually a medical (nutritional deficiency problem) This is good news. Something about the meds, caused this imbalance to occur in my mom. It's quite possible that some drugs (either medical or illegal substances, possibly even acute stress over a period of time) have the propensity to seriously deplete some necessary chemical ingredient in the body's balance.
I might also add, my mother refused all psychiatric medication after that. We went through some terrible terrible years with our mother because she had a list full of symptoms and it was hard at times to figure out what exactly was going on in our house of horrors. Histrionic, Borderline, AntiSocial, add Bi-Polar to that. It's all spin offs of PTSD.
I can't remember when she stopped cycling from her euphoric histrionic highs to her dark and violent borderline lows but she did. In my opinion, before you reach for meds, I would reach for exercise, nature's calm and try to reclaim your nutritional balance. If you can at all tolerate it, don't try to compound the problem by adding more ingredients into the body's natural recipe for healthy balance. You might let everyone around you know that you are battling Bi-Polar and make a plan for yourself (like a fire drill) as to what to do steps 1, 2, or 3 if someone alerts you to the fact that you are cycling. Things like long brisk walks, remove stresses from your life, try going to sleep earlier, waking later, ask someone to help you with chores that you might otherwise find stressful, breathe deeply, meditate and communicate with your "Source"
