Lump in throat
Lump in throat
For past couple of days I have been feeling like I have lump in my throat. Having this feeling make me constantly want to swallow, clearing my through and coughing. It feels like a piece of food is trapped or like a burp that wont come out. I keep fearing the its going block my breathing. My throat feels extremely tight to where I don't feel like talking. I'm focused on it all day and can't seem to get relief. Has anyone else had this and how long did it last? What you do to remedy it?
Re: Lump in throat
I don't have the feeling of a lump in my throat but my chest is tight and my throat gets tight as well. Anxiety is a really strange thing that it can really cause all kinds of weird feelings. I've gone thru periods of this and i'm going thru it again. If i focus on my throat too much it gets tighter and i cough. I think stress is working on both of us. If it helps I've actually choked on a piece of food in a restaurant and there no mistaking it, it happened really quick and someone had to do the hymlick maneuver. Since you have had this feeling for a few days and been eatting, drinking and breathing I think you can relax in the idea of it being stress. If you have Xanax or a type of anxiety meds for "emergencies" try taking it and see if that "feeling" goes away. Or try relaxing and taking a slow deep breath, i think you'll find you are getting a full breath and you don't have to work about your breathing. The thing is with these types of symptoms they go away once you stop worrying about them. I know that's hard to do, I'm having a hard time as well. And yes they can last for days, see if when your mind is occupied on something else like TV you might notice you forgot about it and the feeling is gone then it might come back...that just shows you it's stress and your just focusing on it too much.
i hope this helps and i'm sure there are other people out there that can relate to what you are feeling. Remember it's a old saying to have a "lump in your throat" when you stressed. All that "lump" is is tension and like you said maybe a gas bubble. try stretching sometimes that helps me burp.

Re: Lump in throat
Robin, I have gotten that feeling, but generally only when stressed, like fighting with my boyfriend. Sometimes it almost hurts. When it does come now, I realized I have worked myself over and begin to bring myself back. When you get that feeling, try using your positive dialouge to work it out.
Best of luck!

Re: Lump in throat
I get this lump in throat sensation a lot. It does go away. It's probably anxiety. Go see a Ear Nose and Throat doctor just to make sure. Also get a thyroid check.

It doesn't hurt to get checked out, but you will probably find that it's all stress related. The body can have some really strange symptoms when going thru a panic attack or when we're under exteme stress. I find that when I'm under a great deal of stress, I don't breathe. I actually hold my breath. Sometimes the breathing goes really shallow.
Get checked out, but it's probably all stress related.
