At first (only about a week ago), a .25 xanax would let me sleep for about 4 hours before I woke up with body symptoms. I could take half one and get back to sleep a couple times before morning. I thought that was bad until what I've experienced the last 2 nights.

I take a xanax (doesn't matter if I take 1 or 2, the same thing happens) and like clockwork I wake up in an hour. I don't have full body symptoms, just my whole back is burning up and I cannot get back to sleep no matter what. It's not like an anxiety attack, it doesn't wash over me, it just STAYS constant.

I'm at a loss what to do. My therapist and dr. are both out of the office. I know I'm on a low dose, but taking more at a time doesn't seem to help anyway.

Does anybody have any idea what's going on or what I can do to make it stop?

I'm also on Lexapro 10mg, but that doesn't seem to effect anything.

I'm feeling very desperate.

hi,
are you taking it right before bed or an hour before. how long have you been on the meds.it would do you good to wait until you talk to your dr. we are not qualified to say what you should do. what works for others can or will not work for you.
let me say this. when i used to take meds. one pill would work. then as time went along it did nothing. so when i moved the dr put me on something else along with xanax.i tel lyou this. your body builds up to it and it does not work a long time.i know that meds should be temporary and use your relaxitation tape and relax when you go to bed. if you are on sodas and sugar cut down on them too.
just to let you know that i am med free and can fall asleep anytime.if you relax and do the program and let yourself go you can do it. take care and let me know how you are doing.God Bless and good luck.
p.s. this is just me and not for you to do as i did.thanks
don

I have used zanax off and on with anxiety issues. As far as "knocking you out"..I would say it takes more than that. Just my opinion. I hate meds, and am always nervous about taking them, so I always start out on the lowest dosage and try to stay with that as much as possible.

During the day, I would take .25 every four hours and as time went on tapered off slowly. If I was having very intense anxiety, I would occasionally take .50. This was during the day and only took the "edge" off and I was still able to be anxious.

When it comes to sleeping, you probably need more than that, along with NO stimulants, at least after a certain time. During the day if I take .25 and drink a soda...it totally negates it. .25 is very weak.

There are other things though that help you sleep better than zanax, at least I think that.

My boyfriend suffers from anxiety as well. He has no limitations and doesn't suffer from panic attacks...but he can't sleep at all and he is constantly uptight. His doc put him on an SSRI and something else to sleep, I will have to check. But when he takes that, he is asleep in 30 minutes...and doesn't wake up at all, all night. He will fall asleep with all the lights on and the TV blaring!

See if you should take more, or try something else.

Hi Jodi,
My Dr.told me that with xanax you usually have to keep uping the dose. He put me on celexa at bed time and xanax as needed without a refill. I wonder at times if the "disconnected feeling" is better or worse with the meds. But I have stopped wanting to cry so much.
Hope this helps

I have realized that I can't take Xanax -- unless absolutely necessary -- because it is short lived for me and the result within a few hours is another panic attack, a little bit more intense than the inital one that made me want to take the meds to begin with. I also can't take SSRIs because I have experienced the burning sensations with it. My doctor told me it was anxiety, but I have been doing research and have found it isn't uncommon for SSRIs to have that kind of side effect. It may be the SSRI causing that burning sensation. Yet, if the Xanax is causing you to wake up with strange sensations, I suppose it could be that just as easily. I always just have to wait for the burning to pass -- and it usually does once I calm down (it frightens me at first). I would be interested to know what you find out from your doctor, what he/she has to say. My best to you! Wiskers ~

I'm taking it right as I go to bed. I started with the xanax on 8/6.

I've been offered Ambien but I don't like the idea of taking it and feeling 'out of control' and have heard it doesn't work for some people anyway. I'm afraid my anxiety over taking it would cause it to not work. Of course at this point I'm about desperate enough to try anything.
