My boyfriend has been on welbutrin for a month now and says he feels more depressed. . I asked if it was because of everything going on (he lost his job and other stressors) and he said no he thinks that the medicine is intensifying his depression. He is not one to complain either and not one to be afraid of ssri's like me so i really do think it may be the welbutrin. Is this normal? He has been on it for a month now. . . actually a little over a month now. . one thing. . . a week ago he switched from the brand name to generic. . i dont know if that would have something to do with it. . ? But i mean shouldnt he start to feel better now than worse? has anyone experienced this and gotten better? He did just lose his benefits too so he cant see a doctor either. . thanks for reading.

It is possible for SSRI to make you more depressed, I think. Cymbalta made me have suicidal thoughts and Wellbutrin made me crazy. Paxil worked for anxiety for quite a few years but I've never found anything to really erase the depression.

I was on Wellbutrin then the generic equivalent a while back and I did not experience an increase in the depression. I do however remember reading (or being told) to see the doc if the depression worsened so I think that's a definite possibility for some people. Not sure what to say though if his insurance is gone and he can't see the doc. If it gets bad enough though and he gets suicidal, then he might have to work out some other financial arrangement to be able to see someone and get it straightened out.

SSRI's can make some people more depresed so it is possible. But given his circumstances it could just be all the stressors in his life bringing it on. 4 weeks isnt a tremondous amount of time to be on a med and some people take up to 3 months to adjust to these type of meds. I would call his doc and see what they think.

Wellbutrin was the very first depression medication I was ever prescribed and that was about 6 yrs ago, I ended up on many others since then with the last one being paxil cr and I finally realized that depression meds make me more depressed. About 4 weeks ago my DR prescribed wellbutrin because I am trying to quit smoking and theres something in this AD that curves the erg to smoke so I decided to try it for that purpose and after about 2 or 3 weeks I started to feel severely depressed and like I was going crazy. I then realized why I had gotten off this particular medicine so long ago. I do agree some AD can make you more depressed and it is because of this I am afraid to even try something new because I have enough trouble dealing with my depression on my own.
