How do you know when your depression is chemical or just negative thoughts? It confuses me. Both scare me. I think OMG if its my thoughts that means my mes wont help that and than I think OMG if its chemical than it may never go away and I cannot control it!!! Any replies would be appreciated. Thank you!

If it's chemical meds will help balance the chemicals in the brain. But positive thinking also boosts the "happy-good feeling" chemical called seratonin, which balances the chemicals in the brain.

If it's thoughts, positive thinking definitely helps, but meds helps calm you and helps you by making you feel well enough to work on yourself through positive thinking and the other tools from the program.

Thinking negatively, scary/panic or depression, can deplete chemicals in the brain which can lead to an imbalance, in my opinion, so it's hard to tell whether the problem is psychological or physiological. In my opinion, doctors don't know most of the time.

Thinking is an electrical and chemical process and changing it to more healthy thinking can restore balance over time and decrease or eliminate the need for meds, unless the problem is physiological.

Meds can help stabilize a person and can be an aid in their recovering. They do help a lot of us.

I've been totally off of anti-anxiety meds now for 5 years, was on them for 27 years and anti-depressant meds have dropped by over 85% in same time frame. The program and exercise is what worked for me. Lenore, on the forum, has been off of meds now for two years due ot all the recovery work she has done. The point is that you don't have to be on meds forever.

Don't make it a big deal. You're scaring yourself with your thinking. Try and comfort yourself and break the cycle. Being compassionate and loving to ourselves and putting up the stop sign with negative thinking is one of the hinge lessons of the program. Consistent application of this will help us recover.

I'd say for starters don't eat that crap haha. Stick to foods that are packaged more safely and securely. You're only causing you're own panic and distress by worrying about an issue that's related to something bad for you anyways, the doughnut! Maybe a real issue is you know you don't want to eat foods like that so you focus so much on the obsessive scary thought about getting sick from another reason other than, the doughnut isn't good for you're body... Do you eat healthy otherwise? are doughnuts just a once in a while treat, or part of you're overall diet? be honest..
