Ive been through the program once before and am going through it a second time. I feel guilty that im letting myself get so anxious over this. I recently decided that I want to do stand up comedy. Ive wanted to do it for as long as I can remember but have only in the last few months really written material and looked and gone to open mics to check them out.
However now that I really think I have enough material and know when and where I could go to do an open mic the more Im starting to panic!!
Im scared that Ill have an awful first time and never want to do it again but that would devastate me because I really want to do this. I feel like because I care about it so much if anythign ruins it ill feel awful and never want to do it again. Im so scared of those feelings.I feel like I need a little more confidence then I can go on.
YET, I have this issue with time. I always feel like time is running out, Im getting too old (im 22!!!!!!) my oppurtunity will pass and ill regret it forever. Im starting university in 3 months so ive pressured myself that I HAVE to do it before I go there. But im terrified. so I want to do this really bad but im scared of the anxious feelings and all the bad things that can happen to me ut im not giving myself time to gain confidence because i have such a high expectation for myself.
once more thing, when something stressful or bad happens do you get panicky and anxious at first but then calm down and figure it out?> I feel panicky and anxious when somethign bad happens or something stressful happens (like I injured myself at work, didnt have enough money for bills, loans were wrong) but I always calm myslef down yet I feel like if I am really better I should never have those feelings at all.
Please help!!
I want to do stand up comedy but terrified
You are very self aware. Give yourself some credit for that, ok?
Do you have anyone that you can practice on, w/ your comedy routine? Someone you like or trust? Maybe your grandma or someone that is caring and understanding. If I was near you I would volunteer for you. I'm really easy going. Perhaps find soemone that is that way w/ you and makes you feel non threatened or judged.
Fear can envelope us and make us THINK we are in danger and/or scared, as you well know. But the worst that can happen is you might not get a laugh, so what right? It is the afterward part you should focus on right now, the relief you will get and feel of actually doing "IT".
If you just DO IT ONCE and TRY, you will be amazed at what accomplishment you will feel and gain from your experiencing the real thing out in the world, not just in your house.
Be easier on yourself. Your young and time is not going to creep up on you that fast..ok? I am 43 so take it from me. Life didn't go that fast, so try not to stress over your age.
I too want to perform and start a band and be the lead singer, as I have wanted to do for 15 years or more. As you, I am scared to do it, but I already posted it on my myspace page, so I am on my way I hope..lol. It may take awhile to find people to do it w/ me, but it is a dream and I am tired of hiding from my dreams.
I am also disabled and I think how can i do this when i am in pain or perhaps I would have to cancel? So what right? So what's the worst that can happen? I will have to cancel..whoopy doo doo..LOL. RIGHT?
I sooo hope this helps you. I really do! By the way, I was on stage a few times in singing contests I was so scared I shook in my pants. My knees wobbled, but afterwards I was so ELATED to say the least, just because I did "IT". I got over myself (negative thoughts) and my fears. I will always cherish those memories!! And so will you.
Keep me posted, ok?
Hugs,
Annie

Jocie.... DO IT! I think it sounds fun and exciting! I'd love to see you perform, have you posted anything on YOUTUBE or MYSPACE?
I am definitely not one for getting up in front of crowds or giving speeches, etc. (and Im a teacher! LOL) I can get up in front of my class all day long, but put me in front of my peers and I get VERY nervous!
You might do better than you think you will! And anyway, all experience is good experience, the only way we fail is to not try at all!
Good Luck!
