Panic attacks during driving
I am new to the program and am full of hope that it will work. I have had anxiety for less than a year and within the past 3 months have been experiencing panic attacks especially when driving over bridges. I am in session 2 right now and its talking about facing my fears and the 6step method when an anxiety attack comes on. I am afraid to face my fear driving over bridges because last time I almost fainted at the wheel and was disoriented. I know this is dangerous because other people are on the road. I dont know how to handle this problem. I havent tried it yet and would like to but am afraid. I know I am my own safe place but once I see that bridge its like a tunnel that I can't get out of and its not like I can pull over on a bridge to calm down. Can anyone provide me some advice?
You're spending so much time freaking out about the bridge, that you aren't enjoying the rest of the drive ! Put on music that you like and roll down the window a bit for fresh air. Bring people with you the first few times. They'll get your mind off of "the dreaded bridge". It only feels like you're about to pass out. You won't. The only way to conquer this is to do it. The more you do it, the more you'll realize that there's nothing to fear.
The first time you go over the bridge, #1 make sure you know all the tools on stopping a panic attack.
Secondly bring a trusted friend along who knows about your panic.
Third go when there is very little traffic, such as very early on a Sunday morning.
You can do it, it takes one super scary time, then it'll get easier every time after that, just make sure you have your tools with you.
