My husband and i have started trying to have a baby and i am really worried about the affects of my anxiety on pregnancy. My doctor told i would have to get off my meds, Lexapro, once pregnant but said that i might be cured due to hormone problems. Anyone had any experiance with this?

When I got a positive result on a home pregnancy test, I scheduled an appointment with my doctor's office to see what changes I needed to make with medication, etc. My doctor was not available that week (on rounds) and I was too anxious to wait, so I saw another doctor in the office. I was on Effexor and Allegra at the time, ended up stopping both, and made it through pregnancy without having terrible anxiety or any panic attacks.

In my case, I felt like my substitute doctor gave me a guilt trip. He said that his wife stopped taking all medications while pregnant and said if the joy of pregnancy was not enough for me, that I could take an older medication that had documented experience during pregnancy. I felt like he was saying that he would not let his own baby be exposed to medication during his wifes pregnancy and that the "joy of pregnancy" should be enough.

What it comes down to is that there are a lot of medicines that have not had organized testing during pregnancy, so doctors want to stay away from them. It seems that the newer the medicine, the less likely they will want you to be on it as basically, most doctor's do not want to test on their own patients. However, if you need medication, there are options.

I had obsessive thoughts, worry and anger come back within a couple days after delivery and finally got this program and went back to my doctor for help several months later after I started having frequent panic attacks, feeling overwhelmed and helpless. Hopefully, tools from this program will help you through pregnancy and beyond. Please do not feel like medications are not an option, if or when you need them.

Hope this helped,
Beth

My doc put me on Lexapro and Wellbutrin during my last pregnancy b/c I had a situation with my oldest daughter and couldn't stop crying or get rid of the anxiety. I even went inpatient and they added Remeron to the mix.
There are lots of meds that are ok to take during pregnancy. Take a list of what you are taking to your doc when the time comes so he can advise.
www.webmd.com may contain the pregnancy rating of Lexapro.
During my last pregnancy my doctor actually recommended getting started on an anti-depressant since I had post-partum the last time.
If your doctor won't work with you and you feel like you need the meds for your depression (which is perfectly normal and all right), see a different doctor. You certainly don't want the depression getting out of hand on top of a pregnancy. And the hormones could go either way- might work for you, might make it worse. Good luck! Beverly

I too have been concerned about having panic while I am pregnant. I am going to try to start trying to get pregnant in the spring. I have been tapering off of lexapro for about 6 months now, everyone is different and if you want to go off meds, you might not need such a slow taper as I have needed. So, I will be looking too at all the pregnancy threads, b/c i am going to try to not be on any medication while pregnant, and that is not to judge any woman who needs to be on meds while pregnant. i am a little nervous about it all.
Good luck,
:)
Mary
