I have NO appetite and I need to be eating. I'm rarely hungry and have to force feed myself in the morning to comfort my stomach and protect it from meds. Sometimes I feel like I'm going to be sick when I eat. I have lost my taste for all types of food. Things that used to taste good don't anymore. I've lost 11 pounds which is good but in an unhealthy way. I don't want to gain it back but I need to eat. The Lamicatal is helping with this but not enough. No help from doctors. Any suggestions?

Anne

Try some protien drinks...like Ensure or boost. I used to drink them all the time and still will from time to time. They give your body the energy and nutrients you need to keep going through the days. And once you get over that hump youll be eating again...sometimes its hard to get going. Then try adding bananas, noodles, breads to your diet they are soothing to the stomach and fill you up.

Even a shake made from milk and ice cream and fruit in the blender is a good way to get some calories inside you without actually eating too much.

Once you start eating you will feel better I promise you that. Try the shakes Go get some and drink them they will help you alot.

When my kids dont eat good meals they drink them as well...so they are a big help and if you serve them over ice or keep them in the fridge they taste pretty good.

Can I ask do you live alone?

Sometimes living alone makes it hard to be motivated to cook and eat. So start slow with like I said some noodle or pasta dishes. buy them if you have to ready made if you cant bear to cook them yet. Believe me once you get food in they system you will be feeling so much better.

Its just the getting started thats hard but you can do it.

Hi Anne, are you taking other meds besides the Lamicatal? Some meds take away your appetite, others make you ravenous. I can tell you what I did to spark my appetite. I watched Food Network all day. :) Watching all that food and listening to talk about food made me hungry, plus it got me to try new recipes. Another thing you could try is the website www.sparkpeople.com. It's free to join and it can track your calorie intake. It makes you more aware of how much or how little food you put in your body. You plug in your information and they give you a certain amount of calories per day to take in based on your present weight/height/age, etc. They even give suggestions on what to eat. You know you need a certain amount of calories per day to maintain your weight and this can help you to stick with it. They also give tasty recipes. Remember that food is fuel and if you're not taking in enough fuel, you conk out!

Thank you guys for your input. I will definately try these things. I don't live alone. I am married and it's just me and hubby. I try to eat healthy and he does not. He eats excessive amounts of food and expects me to cook. I tried frozen dinners for health and weight loss and didn't like them, but had to cook for him as well. No I don't enjoy cooking anymore and rarely ever feel like it. But when I cook it's for him and I still don't enjoy it if I'm not hungry, but will eat some cause I know I need to. I also have a hard time deciding what to cook as nothing appeals to me, especially if it's what he wants. He's a meat, potatoes and bread guy. I'll cook a veggie and rice and eat it whether I want it or not, but that's about it.

Is anyone else having problems with posts disappearing and having to re-type them over again besides me? I underwent 6 months of chemo in 1994. My stomach was never right after that. I had open heart surgery in 1999 and was put on Lipitor and aspirin for life. I have been on and off so many meds I know that they helped kill my stomach lining. I ended up with heartburn and reflux. Gastro Dr. put me on Prevacid for life. It works beautifully and have no heartburn or reflux since. I had a hysterctomy in July of 07 but my appetite was leaving me before that. I stopped taking all daytime meds before my surgery (I was taking effexor and something else that I can't remember now and my dry mouth went away)except the Lipitor, Trazadone and Xanax. After my hysterectomy I started back on my aspirin and my loss of appetite got worse. The Lamictal has begun to kick in and I feel hungry sometimes, but not always and not until 1:00p.m.ish. And the dry mouth, as with every brain med I've taken except Trazadone and Xanax has returned. That may be another reason. I don't know. I don't remember ever having an appetite loss until early last year.
