I realize hyperventilation can cause shortness of breath, I was wondering if that is the only way that anxiety causes shortness of breath.

Can anxiety 'tense up' your abdominal muscles so it feels like you're not getting a full breath?

I score normal in peak flow readings, but sometimes I still feel like I'm not getting a full lung-full. I find myself yawning throughout the day, and when I yawn I feel great.

Cheers.

Yes, anxiety can and definitely will tighten your stomach muscles and make you feel like you are breathing shallowly.

Practice the relaxation techniques in the program. Make it a habit to do this everyday. You will notice that your breathing will become more relaxed and deeper. It's a habit that you can change.

Pay attention to your breath. Breathe in slowly. Hold for the count of 4 and then breathe out slowly. Practice daily. When you can not take a deep breath it is because you have not expelled all the air in your lungs. Breathe out only a few times. It will feel a little uncomfortable but you can handle it and it is safe.

Relax your body with the cd.

Thanks for the reply.

It's definitely tense muscles, I had a few 'muscle twitches' in my abdomen after I posted.

This always comes on when I'm stressed out, I just finished taking final exams for a condensed advanced math class in college.

It tends to last a few days, it's like when I'm stressed I overwork the muscles and they need to recover.

Eric,

That is also what happens to me. That is one of the first physical symptoms that comes when I get anxious. My stomach gets tight and makes it hard to breath in the gut instead of the chest. My shoulders also shrug and get really tense. Perhaps when you feel that tightness you can try pushing your stomach out over and over to stretch the muscles out to loosen up. I do that and also start rolling my shoulders to help my body to release those muscles.
