For the las t couple of day I have been having difficulty breathing. Sometimes I feel like my breathing is to thin and sometimes it feels like I cant get a deep breathe. I have been waking up in a panic and can't seem to go back to sleep. When i try to sleep it feel like my heart stops. I have been doing the deep breathing but it keeps me focused on the thing that bothers me the most.

Hi,
I just started the program a couple of weeks ago. I have a HUGE issue with breathing. My biggest thing is that I am afraid I am going to be suddenly allergic to certain foods (cause I heard it can happen...) and my throat will close due to an anaphalactic reaction. This is a new fear for me ...my fears seems to change at times. What you explain is also something I can relate with. I have trouble listening to the relaxation tape as I can't be focused on the exact thing that is scaring me...I find just listening to any of the program cd's just gets my mind off of myself and my breathing. I am upset with this new fear I have with being so aware of my breathing though....it is something that I seem to be battling with throughout the day. AND of course, the more I think about it the worse it feels, the more I feel like my throat is closing....then I panic OR I take my mind off of it then I feel better. Maybe it is just going to take lots of practice and a change of "what if" thinking....

Whenever I fear an allergic reaction, like my throat is clearing up I drink some water. I know if I can drink the water that my throat has not closed up, it definitely helps me.

As for breathing I hear hyperventilation can make you feel short of breath, but I also think that anxiety alone without hyperventilation can cause a feeling of shortness of breath (more like not getting a satisfying breath), by tensing up diaphragm muscles.

I agree with EricC. I have had anxiety for eight years and in the beginning for almost a year I couldn't get a deep breath it was out of control and very scary. I also went through a period where I would choke myself while I was eating because I had a hard time swallowing while I was eating. Drinking water is a great way to realize that you can swallow and also another trick is chew gum it has been a life saver. God Bless
