I had never experienced anxiety util the day my thyroid swelled up like an intertube around my neck. Several doctors have tested my thyroid and said it is normal but extremely enlarged. One doctor did a ultrasound and said I had a nodule and said my thyroid was "goiter" but, nothing else about it. What am I suppose to do?
Did they test your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)? When my thyroid started acting up, my thyroid (T4) was at a good level, but my TSH was really high. This meant my thyroid glad was producing the right amount of thyroid but it had to work overtime (and enlarge) to do it.
Once I started taking thyroid replacement, my TSH went down. We started out low and kept increasing until the TSH got to a normal level. I have been on thyroid replacement ever since. I have it checked once a year to make sure the dosage is correct.
Good luck!!!

I have been to a DO, and 3 MD's (two are alternative health MD's and the other is an endocrinologist). All 4 agreed that even when my thyroid test showed I needed thyroid meds all had a different opinion of how much and when to take it. One actually after being on the thyroid med that my original test showed that I tested OK and really did not need thyroid meds;he put me on them because I had all the symptoms (strong ones) that he had a hunch thyroid meds would help. They did! I do have a TSH over 30,000, so I do have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. My thyroid can sputter back to some life and then I have too much thyroid, so I adjust my meds so I do not feel anxious.
I have found in my own experience that alternative MDs seems to have a better understanding of how the thyroid works. The seems to be geared on how the body works as a whole and patient symptoms and not just textbook information and bloodwork. I also have found that they are more open to listening and not having the "I know it all syndrome." I had several regular doctors (MD) shrug off my thyroid symptoms. Best I can offer you is to go to your local library, hot some thyroid websites and read about it. If there is something with your thyroid, medication can help control goiter as well as many other symptoms of hypothyroidism.
In the end, YOU are the patient and really deserve to have the best quality care. Too bad your doctor gave you an ultimatum. If it were me, I would find a new doctor. ALL doctors do NOT know everything. Good luck! I hope you find care, ansers and opinions you are comfortable with.
