Yes yes yes! I get more than a little anxious when I get hungry. I use to think I was diabetic, even had tests done, everything okay. I am a little overweight because of it. I found myself eating all of the time, even though I wasn't hungry, just so that I wouldn't have to feel that extra anxiety. When I finally realized what was happening, I made sure that I ate breakfast and a few nutritious snacks throughout the day so that I wouldn't get too hungry. It works.

I understand what you mean. I self medicate with starchy foods, like crackers and chips, though I know it's bad for me. I find myself feeling hungry when my stress levels go up, even if I just ate. I understand in my mind that it's not really hunger, it's just my stress. But the hunger still feels real.

Oh my gosh I have the same problem with food. I have often thought about posting about this but didn't know how to explain it. I believe I am hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic (can't remember which is which) because I get very lightheaded when I start feeling hungry or if I haven't eaten anything in several hours. Once I eat something the lightheadedness seems to go away and the anxiety eases up. My Dad says he is the same way and his mother was also diagnosed with being this way. I do just fine until I start to feel the hunger pangs or realize I haven't eaten for awhile at which time I start feeling very panicky, lightheaded, disoriented (sometimes but not always), and nervous. Even if I don't feel the hunger pangs and am feeling nauseated if I notice that i haven't eaten anything for awhile I immediately start feeling anxious and run for the kitchen. I have tried ignoring the sensations/feelings to see what would happen but the panic becomes so great I cave in and go get something to eat, even if its a 1/2 peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Once I have eaten something I settle right down. I have also gained weight and I am not a bit happy but I don't know how to deal with this. I hate that not only does the panic/anxiety control my life but now food does to. Why do we let this happen? Thanks to all three things I have become totally severely Agoraphobic. Praying for all of us to find our ways back to the path that takes us to more normal lifestyles and happiness.

God bless,
Susan

This happens to me too and I know what you mean, I had started to freak if I felt hungry but then it was explained to me that when your blood sugar falls your body produces adrenaline to get your blood sugar back up to where it should be. This is a normal response but we really don't like it when we don't feel good. You know those panic attacks out of a sound sleep? Blood sugar. I have a sandwich before bed and make one to keep handy in case I wake up like that in the middle of the night. It works for me and maybe it will help you. If the heart pounding wakes me up it sometimes takes 1/2 hour after eating to settle things down. Maybe we're just overly sensitive right now and we wouldn't ordinarily notice it. Hope this helps.

I read an article in a health magazine that said that hunger symptoms can mimic those of anxiety..dry throat, tightness in the chest. I get this all the time. Sometimes, I get a really bad 'congested' feeling that goes away when I eat. A friend of mine says his ears clog and his gums itch if he doesn't eat!
I find that eating protein really helps, although sugar/carbs are the instant relief. I usually eat some cheese and crackers late at night.
I forget to eat alot, and then *bam* I suddenly feel like I'm going to just drop.
