jugray i can relate to what you are going threw very well. I really like what aleisa has shared. Sometimes we do have to just let others know that we can't deal with the load noises ect at times but we also have to look at this in a way what can we do so we don't just run from the problem every time it happens. For me i have found that when i can i meditate and before i get started i take three deep breaths and kinda hold them for like a second and then let them out very slowly. This helps me to relax some right away and helps me to lead into my meditation where i can be any where, do anything, become anything. Now i know i can't do this every where so another thing that i have done is to tell myself that the noises will not hurt me and i do my breathing and i feel a little better just from doing them. Now i know that the noises won't hurt me but it's just a reassurence to myself to hear myself tell myself that. But then sometimes i just have to go away from the noise becuase my nerves can't seem to handle it. I don't know if any of this will help anyone else but it works for me. Best of luck to all of us as we try to better ourselves and feel better.

Thank you all for responding. I thought I was going mad!!! I teach third graders and have 26 of them in my room this year. It just seemed that they were all talking at once. Sometimes my ears just hurt from the noise. I can't leave them to calm down so I usually try to distract myself. But on days like yesterday it just doesn't work. It didn't stop until I went home and put a pillow over my head. I will definately try the breathing and maybe some cotton balls to at least muffle the noise a bit. Just be glad your kids aren't in my class LOL! Thanks again everyone. Serenity now!

jugray after finding out that you teach let me first off salute you for what your doing. My hat goes off to teachers. Thank You for teaching and molding our future!!!!!! I don't know if it would be allowed by your princile or not but if it is ... when you have days like you was saying you could try puting on some relaxing instrumental music or Mozart, Bach ect, ect. The kids would love it. A lot of times they work harder and you get a break from there noise and you get to calm down a little as well. Just a thought. My sister-in-law also teaches third graders and i gave her the same idea and it has worked great for her. I know everyone is different but it is worth a try if you wouldn't get in trouble for doing it. Again Thanks for all you do.

Thanks Del, you put a smile on my face today. I will try the music. Music is so soothing to me anyway and it will probably expose a lot of children to a new genre of music that they probably don't get to experience at home. Today is so much better. I have a tiny piece of cotton in my left ear (so I'm not completely oblivious to what's going on in the room LOL) and it has dulled the noise a bit. The funny thing is, just knowing it's there makes me kind of giggle. It's the little things :). Thanks again,
Julie

Sometimes I can't stand the voice of people talking, especially generic chit chat! I can become so sensitive to talking that I want to yell at people to "shut up!" Of course, I don't, but I've wanted to. I'm not for sure why...but I know you're not alone!

Hi,

I'm sure hypersensitive to noise. A year ago I had my loudness discomfort levels checked by a professional audiologist, and they're way down at 45-55 decibels. Therapeutic listening (under the guidance of an occupational therapist) took the worst edge off of it, but only temporarily. I have to wear earplugs outdoors and even then I frequently have to put my hands over my ears. I even need earplugs to sleep.

I also have a hyper startle reflex. Trying to "ignore" noise just doesn't work. It does seem worse when I'm very tired. Since I can't afford a quiet house in a remote, quiet neighborhood, about all I can do is to keep ear protection handy. Thanks for letting me "sound off". ;)

It's just aniety. I use to be so irritated by any kind of noise. People talking, music, and even cars driving by use to make me want to scream, but of course I couldn't scream, that would have sent myanxiety soaring!

Now that I have almost NO anxiety, I can listen to any kind of music, I can chat all day long, I even like the sound of thunderstorms and trains. How about that! :) It gets better.
