Ok, maybe this sounds weird. I may have to have 6 teeth pulled soon and of course I'm very scared. But.... here's the kicker - Its not the work being done that I'm afraid of.
I have this completely irrational fear of throwing up, passing out or losing physical control. I also have a hard time with medication - the nitrous gas almost made me throw up once and now I'm terrified of it.
I'm considering doing the conscious sedation route - where they give you a pill (like Halcion) and you just relax through the procedure.
However, I'm so scared of medicine. I'm afraid I'll take the Halcion and it will make me sick or I'll throw up. Or I'll take it and my brain will fight so hard against it that it won't work and I'll end up worse than before.
Has anyone been through this? Any experiences with the sedation meds? Suggestions? Thank you so much.
Not afraid of the dentist - afraid of everything around it!
Hey there cricketsplace,
I am an expert in the field of having dental procedures done. I recently had an IV sedation procedure and then after that, tried the Halcion sedation procedure. Both went swimmingly with no nausea...just blissful muscle relaxation and a day spent sleeping.
Honestly, nitrous gas isn't that great and it did nothing but make me dizzy, but these sedation techniques...there is NO fighting them. I tried and as soon as i knew it they were tapping me awake telling me my ride was there.
It's a fantastic way to get through the procedure and 99% of the people who did it at my office had no side effects and no one i knew could fight it off.
I have had an insane fear of the dentist AND vomiting for all my life and I was never more relaxed then when I did these two procedures. I say go for it, you'll be fine!
