Has this happened with you? Say for instance when I started my job, I was crapping myself days, weeks prior to this, but the day came and I was so keen to make a good impression I didn't have time for anxiety and it completely went away, sadly it soon returned a day or 2 later.

Or then there was when my wife was due, I litterally dreaded it the full 9 months, then she woke me during the night saying she was having pains, It was full speed ahead and anxiety was forgot about

So it seems for me anyway anxiety can dissapear in an instant if you want or need it to, has this happened to you?

This happens to me whenever I get into big social situations. I FREAK OUT for days before, then I get there and most of the time, Im fine.
The morning of my sister's wedding I couldn't even look anyone in the eye, let alone hold a conversation, I was dreading walking as the maid of honor, all those people looking at me! What if I tripped?! Then I got there and low and behold, everyone was looking at (gasp) the bride! I ended up being perfectly fine. It's like you can focus on whats happening when its happening, rather than thinking about it beforehand. It's the thinking that always screws me up. Is it like that for you?

I guess it just goes to show you that in the end, you may have been dreading something that really wasn't that bad after all.

I totally agree with you.

Things have been crazy the last couple of months. I am unhappy at work, I was selling a house and buying a new house. When I had the closing for my new house (the week of Christmas), I was so preoccupied with everything I wasn't anxious at all. Once I moved in and had my furniture and everything the anxiety came back. But for that whole week I was fine since I was occupied.

I know have a contract on my old house and closing on the 15th of Feb. and I am starting a new job on the 14th of Feb. I am a little nervous about starting but I know I will be busy at my new job that I shouldn't have time to think. My current job I am not busy enough so my mind wanders and all I do is think about everything and anything.

Wouldn't it be great if we can just flip a switch and turn our brain off and stop thinking, but we have to teach ourselves over again to stop thinking, especially negative thoughts.

This happens to me quite a bit and I think WOO-HOO! I'm not going to have those crazy thoughts anymore! And no sooner than I think about not having the thoughts they start to come back again, grrrr! It drives me nuts.
Maybe I should just keep quitting my job and finding a new one again and again?? ;)

It's called being in the present moment.

Kayell - It's funny you mention a switch. I've often wondered how that "switch" actually works. As many of you have commented similarily, I'll be ok one moment and the next, the "noise" and brain chatter stops, I'm good for a while and then creeps back. It's so frustrating.

This is a wonderful anecdote mmk22! So often anxiety results from misdirected attention. Thanks for sharing.

That's right. How many weddings have you been to and noticed that you also are focused on the bride and no one else? How many people at the mall do we actually notice or stare at? We take short glances and look away. So does everybody else. Most people aren't even looking at other's. They are in their own little world or are staring at the floor because they are worried about people looking at them. My therapist pointed this out to me a long time ago and I started to pay attention. It's true. I found that very comforting and I really don't have that hang up anymore. It's great.

My mom just told me a funny story about what you guys are talking about...speaking of the mall...my sister in law and my brother were at the mall and they stopped so she could breast-feed my new little niece. They finished up and continued on their way and like 20 minutes later, my sister in law noticed she forgot to put her shirt back up and her you know what was like hanging out there for everyone to see and she could not believe NO ONE noticed (or at least told her)!!! I laughed so hard b/c I always think people are looking at me and noticing my clothes, hair etc..of course, I have wondered, what was my brother doing...???
