I have had anxiety for as long as I can remember. Worrying, second (and third and forth) guessing, and “what if-ing” are all I have ever known. I also have mild depression. These together mean that there are many days I don’t want to even get out of bed. Either that or I’m too scared to. But I’m learning, and I’m sure you guys are too, that if I have any hope of getting better, I have to keep getting up and facing the day. I have come up with a lot of things that help me fight this and I wanted to share those with all of you.
For anxiety:
-Say a prayer when you are getting anxious or panicked. After you’re done praying for help or peace, just chat it up with God. After all, a distraction usually helps panic or anxiety go away.
-Memorize a bible verse or two that help you feel comforted. Say them to yourself when you are getting anxious or panicked. It will comfort you and also distract your mind. Can’t think of any? Try Jeremiah 1:19 and 29:11, Proverbs 3:5-6, Lamentations 3:22, 31, and John 14:27 and 16:33.
-Listen to songs that you find comforting.
-Clean. It distracts you and probably needs done anyway.
-Read a book. You can either escape into a fairy tale world or read about someone else’s sucky life that’s probably worse than yours.
-Cook. It keeps you busy and you get to eat whatever you made when you’re done.
For depression:
-Pray about it because that’s always a good idea.
-Make plans with friends. It reminds you that you aren’t alone and you will have fun.
-Get your favorite junk food and watch some of your favorite shows and movies.
-Go for a walk. Exercise helps depression and getting out in the fresh air just feels good.
-Listen to feel-good music.
-Volunteer at the YWCA or some other organization that helps people. It will get you out of the house and also put some perspective back on your situation.
I hope these things help you work through your troubles like they helped me. Keep holding on, no matter what. And always remember that God said “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt. 28:20
