Hi Shelly9-
I take Xanax as needed. I don't take it very often and usually at night. It really calms me down and helps me relax. It does not help with faulty thoughts and beliefs. It only provides relief from the physical symptoms of anxiety. It also helps me to sleep. I wouldn't over analyze it. It is a proven med that has helped many people. Just take it as needed and you should be ok.

Xanax is supposed to be the number one prescribed drug for panic and anxiety attacks. You have been prescribed a really small dosage, so, you may not feel the full benefits of this drug!!!
They tend to block out the negative thoughts, and make you much more calm!!!
As with any drug, if taken over a long period of time, they stop working!!!!
I would advise anyone who has been prescribed xanax to take it, but, only until you learn the tools for overcoming panic and anxiety disorder!!!
When given the proper dosage, it seems like a miracle cure!!!! Remember, that it is only a temporary miracle cure, and your body will become immune to it over a period of time; therefore, it will not help you nearly as well as it once did!!!
Do not be afraid of this pill. This is especially designed to block the symptoms of panic and anxiety disorder!!!! God Bless...

I have taken Xanax on and off for a few years now. I've taken between .25 and 1mg doses. Xanax has been a life saver for me. I usually don't take it unless I am having a panic attack that I can't get under control. It slows your mind down a lot, so if you suffer from anxiety, it will calm your racing thoughts and keep the adrenaline from pumping in to your system. I use .25 during the day if needed, but I try to take it as a last resort, because I'm not comfortable driving while I'm on it, and with 2 kids, I tend to be pretty busy. It also makes you sleepy after a few hours, so don't be surprised if you take a nap after taking it.
Xanax is the only anxiety medication that I have responded well to. I have tried a few different medications, like Cymbalta and Seroquel for anxiety and panic disorder, but they always made my symptoms worse. I am treating my anxiety with self help books, a healthy diet (still smoking though) and exercising a few times a week.
Xanax is habit forming though, and the most I have taken is .5mg for almost a month straight. It's not something you should take everyday for a long period of time, and definitely don't take it with alcohol.
Xanax is my back up if exercise and positive thoughts and such don't work to control my anxiety. I always have some with me just in case, but I usually don't need it more than a few times a month. It really has been my saving grace when nothing else works. I like that it slows the racing thoughts I'm having, which make me more able to think about what I'm anxious about, and realize that it's no big deal or I can deal with it if I need to.
Your reactions to this medicine might be different than mine, but I do recommend it if you need it.

Shelly9, I also take xanax 0.25, and it does help to calm and relax me. Somedays I don't need it at all, but other days I may take 2 or 3 a day. The drug does not change the panic, you have to do that. It will relax you so that you can think through the panic. You are the one in control of your thoughts.

hi Shelly9, i, too have taken xanax on an off for 21 years... the way it helps me is to literally block the racing negative thoughts... other folks may not agree with this... maybe it's just my mind, but it stops the thoughts and relaxes me enough that i can function and do the things i need to do... even play the organ at church... so i take between .5 and 1 mg as needed, buy suprisingly enough... after i graduated this program-- i've been able to stop taking them completely for a week now... it feels great to be in control of the thoughts that i let stay in my mind!... i still get the negatives "just passing through" but i don't let them stay... my doc said that folks that get addicted to xanax are taking 2 mg four to five times a day and that i did not need to worry about that right now... yes, they do make me sleepy and i took them only at night for a while... this still helps... i keep a few in my purse for the "just in case" times... but i haven't needed to take them for like i said a good week now... good luck with your body and mind on taking this drug... it's been a real help to me... i believe God created everything for our good... we just need to know how to use it for HIS glory... much LOVE,
kj
