Everybody is different. But the norm for an anti-depressant to start to work is about 2 to 3 weeks, but sometimes as much as 6 weeks. I don't understand why it takes so long for these meds to start to work. Leopolda

It can be anywhere from 2-8 weeks. I started to feel better at 2 weeks, but each week it got better and by 8 weeks I felt the full effects of the meds. I have heard some people say it has taken 2-3 months on the meds to start to feel 100% like there old self, give it time!

I just started taking lexapro this morning...I am sooooo afraid of taking meds that I took a 5 mg. tablet cut it in half to 2.5 and then cut that in half....so it's 1.25 So funny I know...now I afraid I am going to have all the side affects and I am panicking. I CANNOT sleep no matter what I take. I slept from 1:30 to 5 and I am up for the day AGAIN. I take Xanax and Inderal and I should be knocked out but it's not working that way. Anyone else have insomnia and any suggestions. I am going to walk ALOT today to poop myself out. Any suggestions would be nice. Thanks for the support. Laura

I was sensitive to my medication (Generic Zoloft) and it took me nearly 6 weeks to begin feeling better. I stopped once for 5 days and started again for fear of withdrawal. Others encouraged me to stick with it and finally my body adjusted.
I had to restart at a reduced dosage for two weeks before switching to the initial recommended dosage. You may have the same problem.
I had sleeping problems also but sleep is much improved as well. The insomnia scared me as I feared other physical problems due to lack of sleep. Oddly, though I was apparently getting little sleep at night, I was not over tired or falling asleep during the day. I started some warm milk or half a bowl of cereal at bed time and that seemed to help.
Like you, I don't want to take medication if I can avoid it. I had Xanax but only took it the first few nights as it did not seem to help sleep anyway.
Best Wishes
