I was just wondering how long you typically are on meds while going through cbt. I've just read a lot about the high success rate when the two are combined, and was wondering how long you usually would be on the meds. Are you supposed to take them for just the duration of the therapy if you are doing well?

Has anyone tried this before?

CBT therapy generally takes from 12 to 24 weeks and most people are able to wean off their meds soon after completion of their CBT. It is recommended that you make countering your thoughts in the TEA form part of your routine even after the CBT is over for the best results.

Ok I originally replied to Newrunner, but then I see your post Chrissy that has the same info attributed to me? Man this is frustrating and hard to follow :x
The bottom line is if you dedicate yourself to CBT and the TEA forms there's a good chance you can get off of meds completely like I have

Yes, I am completely med-free now and feeling better than ever. AS for how long it takes? It depends on how hard you work at the exercises and take to them. I would say based on the people I know who have done it successfully it takes roughly 12-36 weeks before they wean off their meds. I was in the middle of that range personally. I still counter my thoughts in the TEA forms a few minutes each day and that is what I am told is the key to lasting med-free relief.

Based on my experience I would say that's exactly right! :D

Hi Ashley,
The TEA forms are the excellent thought countering exercise in the CBT book by Sam Obitz (www.tao3.com) If you do them for a few minutes everyday they will help retrain your brain to think more objectively and eliminate most of your anxiety. They have worked wonders for me.
