Hi, I mainly suffer from depression and anxiety. My doctor has me on Prestiq, Abilify, Gababentin, Lamotrrogen, Clonozapam, trazadone (for sleeping) and now Ritalin. I don't like taking all these drugs and don't think they are having much effect anyhow. I am concerned about putting all these medications in my body and the effect it could have on my liver. Has anyone else been put a large number of drugs and what effect did it have? Does anyone have any opinions or thoughts on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michele,

That does seem like an awful lot of drugs to be on. I am currently on 2 and have been for a while. I take 40 mg of Paxil and 25 mgs of Trazadone to help me sleep at night. I have never been on more than two.

I am sorry that I don't have any answers for you, but you may want to get a 2nd opinion. I am not sure what the ritalin is for. I do know that some people have to be on different drugs to get the right balance, but yours does seem excessive. What are the dosages?

I am taking .50mg of Zoloft at night as well as .75mg of Trazadone at night for sleep but I am worried that I am taking too much of the same thing. I asked my doctor since I take my Zoloft at 7:00 p.m. and teh Trazadone at 10:00 if this will affect the serotion but he said it shouldnt, arnt both of these drugs the same thing? Am I getting too much SSRI's, i think that's what worries me so of course i feel a little anixious because I worry....

Thats a good thought too...I see my new therapist tommorrow will be my third specialist. I think my issue here is my head keeps telling me i need meds to sleep so i think i need them so I take them even though I am so tired at night and actaully pretty relaxed i just cant get it through to my head to think that way. Are you having the same issues with sleep?

I too am on a number of medications similar to you. My doc has worked with me for 18 months to try to acheive the perfect combination and balance for me. Make sure your doctor listens to your feelings and concerns each visit and makes necessary adjustments. You may be on the right ones or need to cut back here and there and adjust dosages. People handle the meds to completely differently and you can never be sure if they'll have the same affect on you as someone else.
When I mentioned taking Xanax and it being addictive, my doc told me not to worry about that now. We'd cross that bridge when we felt it was time to wean off. It made sense not to add another worry to my list.
Also, it's expensive, but I took the genetic blood tests. Besides showing what you are prone to (we didn't even really look at that), it shows how you metabolize meds. Turns out that the Pristiq and Abilify I'm on was not being metabolized by my body and building up to "toxic" levels. I said toxic because I couldn't find the right word. Too much of it would be retained by my body and affected my ability to sleep. I was getting so run down from lack of sleep and couldn't figure out way despite him doubling the sleeping meds. Anyway, he cut the two meds back to twice a week instead of once a day and I've been able to wean down to half the sleeping meds again.
Hope there's some info in here that helps.
