What ALWAYS helps me is to know that:
IT'S TEMPORARY
The surge of hormones and chemicals your brain pumps out is only temporary and here is the REALLY awesome news: YOU control how long or even if you trip your fight or flight!
Watch your thoughts... right now you are thinking things like 'What if I have a panic attack and have no medicine?" (adrenaline surge)
"What if it is really bad and I can't control myself?" (MORE adrenaline)
And so on and so on.... CATCH your thinking, and say, "STOP! That is a scary thought about my medicine and I know where this thought will take me and I choose not to think it" Immediately start your breathing technique and watch as your body AND MIND start to calm down....
Breathe in...two... three... pause
Exhale...two...three... four... five (try to make exhale longer) Tell yourself as you do this, "Ah, it's passing... it always does.... there it goes.. buh-bye, now"
Do your breathing for at least a count of 10 then purposefully get yourself busy doing something. And, voila! You just handled or stopped your own panic attack.
I got "forced" to handle my own panic just a couple of weeks ago when my "safe route" flooded and FORCED me onto the freeway. Just like you, had NOT planned on tackling that crap that day. See my post under "Triumphs" titled "Know you guys can relate" As much as I HATED facing my panic that day it turned out to give me a huge boost in believing that I was stronger than anxiety...
You are too, you just don't believe you are w/o your meds yet.
YOU CAN DO IT!
