Apple cider vinegar for acid reflux?
Has anyone with acid reflux ever tried ACV for it? I hear it works good. But i have difficulty swallowing , lump in throat, nauseous feeling in throat, spit a lot and a need to burp to feel better. Not so much acid in my stomach its more in my throat and flares up BAD when anxious (I'm anxious a lot!!) I wonder if anyone had tried ACV for this or know anything good for GERD. Also, I went to but some Prilosec and it says to speak to a doctor if you're using Diazepam (anti-anxiety drug) and I take lorazepam. Same family. Does anyone take Prilosec who also takes
Benzo- diazepines AKA -Ativan, xanax, klonopin ??? Thank you

Hello Holly, it's me again,
Yes, I have GERD, acid reflux, etc. And yes, my chiropractor uses ACV for his GERD, acid reflux. He sais that it works for him. For me however, it was not good. It made the internal lining of my esophagus become inflamed, which is part of my problem with my choking/breathing issues.
I know I've mentioned it to you before, and I apologize if I'm being pesky, but the herbal therapy that I'm taking is addressing the infection in my system that is causing the inflammation, which is also addressing the GERD/acid reflux as well as all my other conditions.
If you don't have the intestinal/esophagus inflammation, then maybe ACV would work for you. If you decide to try it, just take tiny sips first and see how your throat and esophagus reacts before you drink more. The ACV that is required for this has the "Mother" in it. You have to get it at a health food store.
There are other products at the health food store for these symptoms too. Beets are a natural acid reducer. I took aciphex, prylosec, nexium, zantac, etc. etc. and they all eventually made me nauseous.
Good luck - Eileen

Vinegar could make it worse. I know it did with me. I would get an appt. to see a gastro doc and have them make sure nothing else is going on. I had a endoscopy done (which was painless and easy)and they found a hiatal hernia, which was casuing my gerd. I was put on Protonix and changes my diet and have been fine since.

Hey Holly,
I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia around 1986. Some foods to avoid are:
(Pizza, lasagna, spaghetti sauce, salsa; all=Tomato paste), beer, liquor, raw vegetables (especially cauliflower and brocolli), caffeine, carbonated stuff, anything that gives you gas, acidic things like orange juice.
Tums are good for gas relief and contain calcium which we all need.
My current doctor put me on Prevacid and my esophagus has healed. I only took it a couple months. I can now eat many of the things on my list up there.
i still avoid some things as I learn what is bad. Still lowered caffeine and I try not to eat 2-3 hours before I sleep. Sometimes, sleeping on my left side helped.
a pharmacist could address the drug interaction questions.
Getting 8 hours sleep helps too. I am on session 5 and learninig more about diet and exercise.
I ran across some info on Cider vinegar but I think you need balsamic vinegar for stomach problems. I have been trying the cider vinegar (2-4 tspns) with 8 oz of water. Add honey for taste and I put a little baking soda in to lower the Ph. I have only been drinking a glass or two for 3 days but so far so good. There is a noticeable improvement in mood soon after but it only lingers a short while. ACV = cider vinegar is supposed to be a great thing. I will see how it works.
I hope this helps.

I was also diagonosed with acid reflux in Nov. '07- but believe I probably had it since July. I had and still sometimes have reflux so bad that my tounge is completely white, I get a form of herpes (GROSS!) on the very back of my tongue, and all my food tastes sour.
When I finally saw a specialist in Nov., he told me it was stress-related and put me on 40 mgs. of Nexium a day- about two months later he increased this to 40 mgs 2x daily.
Although I'm doing far better with stress/anxiety and gradually tapering with the zoloft and klono (NO AMBEIN SINCE LATE APRIL!!!), I'm still battling the reflux.
I also read about ACV but found it too acidic on its own and I puffed up like a blowfish with the baking soda.
Here are some of the things I'm trying that seem to work:
drinking lots of water (min. of 80 oz.daily)
eating smaller portions of food
taking Floragen3 (probiotic)
taking 2 tbs. aloe vera juice 3x daily (this helps to soothe and supposidly heal the esophogas and stomach lining- it's worked well for me)
I'm also having acupressure done every 10 days. I know there are some quacks out there (I saw one in Dec.), but I can't believe the difference he's made in nearly EVERY aspect of my ailments!
Basically, he's been working on my digestive system. I've had headaches my entire life and in the past couple years developed severe migraines. He explained that when our bodies don't eliminate waste on a regular basis, we can become "toxic" causing all kinds of problems- including headaches, mild depression, anxiety, weight gain, and even acid reflux!!! The reflux happens because the waste builds up in the sm/lg intestines and pushes against the stomach causing a hiatal hernia. (I think I've explained this correctly?)
Anyway, I've seen him for the past 2 months and have not had a migraine (highly unusual considering I also get hormonal migraines). I've still had regular headaches (not as frequent) and struggle with constipation (how embarassing... though, I can tell when I don't drink enough water).
I know it seems crazy that a multitude of problems can be caused by constipation... but I believe it.
Oh, my little sister has developed acid reflux and she chews 2 400 mg. licorice root (DGL) vitamins before each meal. It seems to be working for her, but she is not on ANY other Rx. My pharmacist said becauses of my other scripts, I should avoid this (ACV, aloe vera, and probiotics are all ok with ssri's and benzo's).
I'm blessed to have found knowledgable, holistic individals, but I would also recommend an EXCELLENT book called Prescription for Natural Cures written by both an MD and an ND. It covers almost every common ailment and provides a variety of natural remedies proven by research to heal.

I agree with the previous posters about the diet. Avoid all of the above, plus spicy foods, acidy fruits and veggies, chocolate,etc...
Raise the head of your bed so you sleep on an incline or get a bed wedge. DO NOT eat large meals and eat bland foods. Do not eat 4 hours before bed time. Drink lots of water, do not bend down at the waist, especially after eating, sit upright after eating.

Hello SCDon,
My knowledge about herbal treatments is based completely on my personal experience. Issues in my life have driven me in this direction.
I've had a lifetime of emotional difficulty with family, etc. and in the last 15+ years I've lived with increasing pain and discomfort. I ignored it for most of that time relying on a lot of Motrin, etc. Then after my daughter was born in 2001, I started experiencing intense pain that would not go away. I was diagnosed with Fybromyalgia and GERD/acid reflux. Since then, there have been a number of other health issues that have come up. The doc gave me several medications to treat my situation, but everything had side effects. I found my own natural means from the health food store to treat my pain/issues. Although everything made life bearable, nothing was really making me feel good enough to be my best and in life 100%. It wasn't until I found a specialist, just this last May, that I finally found the correct herbal treatment necessary to address my personal health issues.
For years, I have given the medical community my unwavering allegiance and have been (and still am) so very thankful to many docs I've seen over the years who have very successfully treated many issues I have had. However, it seemed that some docs would try out anything to see if it would help. But everything seemed like a bandaid and wasn't really addressing my true problems. Then I became somewhat educated about the politics and economics of the pharmaceutical companies and started to learn more about options.
In 2005, I saw my Mom when she was in Hospice, close to death. She was so heavily drugged and had been for many years (Parkinson's Disease). I know that many diseases require medication and it is not for me to assume what is right for another person with something this severe. But for me, I decided at the very moment that I saw my Mom close to death, that I was not going to be medicated into oblivion.
Although I have learned that my anxiety has been with me for most of my life, I really didn't know it until this last April when the racing heart, panic, swallowing/choking, etc. issues started. I said a prayer a year prior and asked God to fix my messed up life. He started right away addressing every aspect of my life from finances, to housing, to relationships, to my health. My anxiety is part of his "fixing me". It has shown me what I need to understand about my body and my spiritual and emotional self that I've been trying to understand for many years. He has also given me the cure at the same time. Praise God! When my anxiety symptoms showed up, I was terrified and was willing at that point to accept the possibility of taking medication, if it was the only way to fix my anxiety/panic.
The doc gave me a prescription to address my anxiety/panic - Xanux and Celerex. YIKES! I was a ZOMBIE for 3 days and it made me much worse than I ever was. My heart was racing for almost 24 hours at one point and then my doc told me to stop taking it. I don't think a person's heart is suppose to race for that long.
At that point, I was willing to try any way possible to treat my anxiety/panic that would not require meds. I decided to see a specialist (Nutritionist) who started me on herbs to treat my body symptoms. He is treating as many of my symptoms at a time as he can. I had an adrenaline imbalance (epinephrine/norepinephrine) which the thyroid plays a role in. This contributes to my anxiety/panic. The herbs he has given me has pretty much put a stop to my anxiety/panic. There are no side effects. And I want to say that I also have found meditation (healthjourneys.com) and especially Lucinda's program to also play a huge role in my recovery. I'm astounded at how wonderful it is to be thinking positive and staying "in the moment". This is a lifestyle change for the long haul and I'm glad I'm on my way there.
The other herbs I am taking are for pain, inflammation (intestinal and otherwise), calcified tendonitis, intestinal infections (that antibiotics cannot treat), and sleep. He is still working with me and there may be more work to be done. He added treatment for my female menstrual hormones too and it is really making a difference. Herbs are just as powerful as prescription meds - without the side effect. I have found that there is both a physical and emotional (positive/negative thinking) side to my anxiety. I so happy that I have found an herbal treatment answer to my physical causes to my anxiety as well as answers for my emotional anxiety.
I wish I could elaborate on what herbs treat what illnesses. I know a few things from what I've taken. Everything I take is a mixture of different herbs. It is too much for me to list. You can check out his web site if you like (www.doctorsresearch.com). I believe his herbs are listed there. A few I can share with you are passion flower helps to relax, cloves help to clear yeast infection in the intestine, beets help to reduce acid in the digestion, cherries help to give natural melatonin for better sleep, and magnesium helps with sleep and I believe also plays a role in nerve cell repair. You will probably find the answers you are looking for in your proactive approach. I've learned that that is what is required these days. One has to be proactive in our own health and other life issues. I find amazon.com to have a lot of very helpful resources that cover many health issues. And you can search the web and probably find someone in your area that can help you further too. Their approach is quite unorthodox and hard to believe. I still chose to try it out anyways and I am so glad that I did. I am so much better for it.
Sorry for the long winded answer. I hope I addressed your interest and maybe have given you some ideas to follow up on. I would like to hear from you if you find anything further on this issue. Thanks so much.
Take care.
Eileen

Eileen,
Thanks for the post- I found it very informative. You mentioned you've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Have you seen the new DVD's Mayo Clinic has developed? You might want to check out www.gaiam.com under the wellness clinic.
I don't suffer from fibromyalgia but have a colleague who does. I was thinking about ordering the DVD for Insomnia even though I've been sleeping pretty well lately.
