My doctor has found what she believe is a goiter on my thyroid. I went in for an ultrasound on Friday and have been trying not to think about it. But, I'm scared. Has anyone else every dealt with thyroid problems?

I've had thyroid nodules for about 20 years and all the tests you can imagine.I found a really good endocrinologist that I go to for this. It hasn't affected my thyroid levels so far and found out it wasn't a goiter but cysts that need to sometimes be drained. (sounds painful I know but it isn't) It's good to check with an endocrinologist on this, as my GP thought mine was a goiter also but wasn't.

I can't help but think CANCER every once in a while. I am doing very well not what-ifing. But I must admit I am troubled to think that something is wrong with me and I don't know what it is.

I know I felt the same way when my GP was checking my thyroid years ago and said "uh oh."
The first thing I thought was "oh no I have cancer." I was much relieved when I found out that this is fairly common in women and chances are it was not cancer. I was nervous all the time until I had all the tests completed and still get a little anxious when the endocrinologist checks it. By now though I am so used to having this I don't think much about it anymore. It was just the initial shock of not knowing exactly what it was.

I'm 28 years old and about 9 years ago during a routine check up, my doc found a goiter as well and immediatly referred me to an endocrinologist. After blood tests and a tyroid scan it was concluded that my thyroid was overactive (hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease). So, I had my thyroid removed by drinking a radioactive iodine treatment. Nothing painful. They told us that usually everyone that has this done, their thyroid becomes underactive and they just have to take a pill once daily for the rest of their life. A few months after my treatment of course it was now under active (hypothyroidism) so I take a little hormone replacement pill everyday. There's nothing to be scared of. You'll be fine. And please let me know what the results come back to be.
