Putting it metaphorically, how does one peacefully meditate when they are at a heavy metal concert?

Don't mean to be a smarty pants :D, but my homelife can be like a heavy metal concert much of the time. And it's been like that for me for most of my life. I don't mean that I have loud music around me, I mean the negativity and harsh comments, etc. are always around me and being directed at me. I agree with everything I'm learning about how I have to keep the peace within myself regardless of what is going on around me. But does anyone find this situation in their life and has anyone been able to "meditate peacefully" around it and keep your focus on the positive and your heart and mind clear and unaffected by the negativity? Any suggestions or secrets? :)

Thank you - Eileen :)

Hey Eileen. I actually took a course that involved meditation while you have your eyes open and are moving and doing things throughout the day and are surrounded by daily activities of others. I have also read it in I believe one of the programs I am currently doing. You can meditate in complete silence or not. The thing to do is to focus on slowing down, and focus on what you are doing. Focus on the smells, what you are touching and how it feels. The point in my class was to find the beauty in the present moment and to get in touch with the world around you, even normal household objects. One of our activities included getting up in the morning and as soon as we get out of bed stand on the floor and focus on how that feels. How the rug or carpet/tile/wood feels underneath our feet. Then when we ate breakfast we were to focus on the taste and savor every bite and texture. Even when we brushed our teeth we were to focus on how the bristles felt in our mouth etc. and so on. We were to do this all day, and it just turned out to be a really different and wonderful experience. Like Lucinda says, just stay focused on the present moment, on yourself and what you are doing. Focusing like this on everything you are doing is a great distraction, but if you have negative thoughts, that might just happen and it's okay. Just let them pass by quickly and go back to what you were doing. It is very possible to find peace and happiness even during chaos. We can choose to do it. Again, everything takes practice for perfection =P

Thank you very much Schpludoinkle! I really like the way you describe and explain the process. It is very helpful to think of it this way. I will give it my best shot. Thank you, thank you!
