Stress Center Peer Support

My cat is 15 and has recently lost weight. She can't walk well and has stopped eating & drinking. I took her to the vet yesterday and cried for 4 hours. She weighs 3.5 pounds and I can't make her stay alive. It's time for her life to be over. I've never had to do this before. I've had pets who were put down because they were so sick, but I wasn't living with them at the time, so it was easier to detach myself from the situation. In this case, I have to make the decision. She's in pain and she's old. She's so tired... It's time to let her go.

I'm just so sad. I don't think I've ever been this depressed. Please pray for me... and Loxley. She's given me a great 4 years (her original owners tried to have her put down because they were done with her, but we saved her). I'm gonna miss her so much I can't even say.

I want to stop crying....

Hi, If it's any consolation, my cat died too a few months ago. We had Mr. Kitty for sixteen years and it was awful seeing him going down hill and being sick for quite a long time. His kidneys were failing and he was losing weight. He went from a 22 pound cat to 6 pounds when we had to put him to sleep. My husband and I both were depressed about losing him. He was our child - we don't have kids. I still talk to his picture everyday and tell him what a wonderful cat and companion he was to us. We haven't gotten another cat. He can't be replaced. You will be able to stop crying and feel good about knowing that you gave your cat a wonderfull life for four years. You will be blessed for this. Best regards,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. I've had animals all my life and have had to euthanize all of them in the end. Four of them were 20 years old and I had them for all of the 20 years. So it was like losing family members for me.
Everytime I said I would not get another cat but I always did. The grieving is the same as if you had lost a close person in your life but you will feel better as time passes.

I know how you feel. My one and only cat that I had for 14 years died last June, and like you, I had never had a pet die from "old age". It was awful and my husband was worse than I was. We were going to bury her in the backyard but he couldn't bear to put her in the ground, so we had her cremated.

If it's any consolation, although I still miss her every day we have a new kitty, and even before we got the new kitty last month as time went by I didn't feel so depressed. This too shall pass and what a lucky kitty she was to have had you!

Ms Purple...your grief is normal and to just remember it will get better with each day. My husband and I lost our sweet dog to cancer a couple of years ago. We both cried for days! Even months later we would break down. Now, we enjoy her memories and sometimes laugh over the funny things she used to do. Hang in there and cry as much as you want...it will get better.

thank you all so much for your responses. I haven't taken her in yet. It's going to happen in a couple hours. I don't have any money, so luckily my Dad is able to help us pay for it. My fiance says I'll be OK. I have to trust in him and trust in y'all and trust in the Lord.

She's weak, tired, and confused. I know she's ready and I know God will hold her like I can't.

I hope I can make it through work tomorrow. I work with kids and I'm just hoping to get some hugs. I know I'm gonna cry.

I am so sorry about your cat. We lost our cat last year too. Just go ahead and cry..........it is good medicine and helps you to heal. I am so glad you work with kids. You will be so surprised how they will be able to encourage you. sometimes not even meaning too. Kids are so wonderful to around during times like this. I am praying for you. God Bless

i am really really sorry about your cat. i know that has to really hard on you. of course, i'll be praying for you and your cat also.

I just had to put my dog down last monday. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. But just know you're making the right decision. It's not fair to her to live this way, or to you either! All I can say is cry cry and cry! I cry whenever I feel it. You said in your post you want to stop crying...don't be silly cry all you want! It's sad and they crying makes you feel so much better. I've cried everyday since we put our Lucy down. My kids are so confused! It's hard but you'll get through it. I'll be praying for you.
