Tell your success stories in assertiveness

Post by peony » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:58 am

Staring session 7 tomorrow.

I find it hard to be effectively assertive. Either I am passive and keep it in, or I explode and get too excited and people cant relate to the emotions. The anger session has been helpful, but now what to do....?

I need the tools and hope to find them here in session 7

Interested to hear your success stories in assertiveness.

I did not know where to post this. I just read this quote from a magazine this weekend.

It may help some people.

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you

really stop to look fear in the face...You must do the thing you think you cannot do".

Hello All:

I received this information recently when I was in my Intensive Outpatient Program.

PASSIVE
Passive behavior is allowing other people to treat you, your thoughts,
and feelings in whatever way they want without your challenging it.
Passive behavior means doing what others want you to do regardless of your own desires.

ASSERTIVE
Assertiveness is thinking and acting in ways that stand up for your
legitimate personal rights, to express honest feelings comfortably.
Assertiveness is thinking and acting without denying the rights of others.

AGGRESSIVE
Aggressive behavior is demanding what you want regardless of the rights
of others. Aggression can be either physical or emotional.

ASSERTIVE
Assertiveness is thinking and acting in ways that stand up
for your legitimate personal rights, to express honest
feelings comfortably. Assertiveness is thinking and acting
without denying the rights of others.

Problem is attacked.
Your legitimate rights are claimed.
You recognize the rights of others as equal to yours.
Establishes a pattern of respect for future dealings.
Lets the other person know how you think and feel.
Works toward goals.
Chooses activities for self.
Deals with anger.
Talks to others with respect for that person and yourself.
