Any ideas on how to get more protein if you're a vegetarian?

Post by MirandaLey » Mon Nov 26, 2012 1:42 pm

I want to eat more protein after hearing Dr. Fischer talk about how important it is to keep your energy up. I love eating carbs at night, for dinner, it really relaxes me at the end of the day. But I think for breakfast and lunch I'd like to get more protein.

I know there are serveral ways of getting protein even if you're a vegeterian (I am a vegeterian but I do eat fish). What are some ideas?

I already know about:
- tofu
- fish
- nuts

I can't eat eggs or much cheese.

Hemp seed is really high in protein. You can probably put a few tablespoons in a smoothie or something and be good to go. And in case you're wondering, no it's not the same as marijuana, in fact you can buy a decent sized bag of hemp seed at Costco.

I would recommend that you see a Nutritionist.
Your Primary Care Physician or one of your Specialist doctors should
be able to recommend one. I see a Gastroenterologist each year
and he recommended a Nutritionist to me.

I have only seen the
Nutritionist once so far, but she gave me some good information.
Of course, each persons dietary needs are different, so the information
the Nutritionist gives to you is based on your specific health issues.
Nutritionists are not usually covered by health insurance, but you
would probably just have to see the Nutritionist once to ask
him/her about getting the proper amount of protein when you
are a vegetarian.

I was a vegetarian 20 years ago. I did not know much about
being a vegetarian. I should have investigated more about
the correct way to be a vegetarian so that I could get all
of the proper NUTRITION that my body needed to be healthy.
Become a smart vegetarian and read some reputable books
on the subject so that you make sure your body is getting
what it needs. Later on in life I was found to be so iron
deficient that I actually needed a blood transfusion.
I have been B12 deficient for several years now too.

Greek Yogurt is high in protein.

Also, I have been using Whey Powder in my smoothies and that
is a great source of protein.
I cannot remember if I bought Whey Protein Isolate or the other kind.
I bought my Whey Powder at Sprouts and not
at the "health food" store.
