One of the concerns of smokers trying to quit smoking is weight gain. Weight Gain is one of the Quit smoking side effects . But only a small number of people put on a few kilos. Weight gain is usually seen only in the first few months of quitting smoking. The weight gain is usually seen only in the range of 3-5kg but generally smokers weigh 3-5kgs lesser than non-smokers. Smokers are generally lean because nicotine speeds up the metabolism rate in the body. It also damages the taste buds due to which the food becomes less enjoyable and hence its consumption decreases. Cigarette also distracts attention from appetite and is a zero calorie option.
While quitting smoking, the decrease in the metabolism rate can be compensated by few changes in the diet and some exercise habits. Replacing chocolates and crisps with a piece of fruit, low-fat cereal bar or yoghurt is a good option. One must also cut down alcohol. Generally appetite seems to increase when one quits smoking. The best option is to eat little and frequently.
To maintain normal weight, 55 to 60 percent of the daily food should contain carbohydrates. A carbohydrate rich diet tends to burn more calories. Carbohydrate rich foods include vegetables, fruits, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and porridge. Exercise is the best way to keep weight gain under check. Half an hour’s brisk walk every day helps to burn around 200 calories of fat. Exercise also increases the sense of well-being, reduces stress levels and prevents boredom.
Weight gain worries should be put off and one must concentrate more on quitting smoking.
