Hello. I am new to the forums here and new to the program. My problem here is that im a regular smoker. I have been trying to quit for sometime. Now I know that smoking is supposed to relax and calm people but could smoking also cause deppresion and anxiety? I cant seem to shake the feeling that it only makes my anxiety and depression worse. Anyone have any opinions? Thank you

While I'm not a smoker, and cannot speak to that. I wanted to welcome you, and reassure you that you've come to the right place. I have just started this past week, and having this community has been invaluable.

Welcome!
Lisa

Hi Jango,

I have been smoke free for a year and a half. It has been a long journey since I have smoked for a long time. When I smoked, I actually was relaxed. That is what made quitting hard on me. Everyone is different. Our bodies all function and adapt differently. Quitting for you may be just "what the doctor ordered." Good luck and welcome. These boards have been a blessing in helping my recovery and everyone is very helpful.

i'm a smoker and smoking does increase anxiety and panicy feels for me but like Belinda333 said "Our bodies all function and adapt differently" but personally it does play a roll in anxiety and can increase symptoms like anxiousness ( the crave for a cigarette)to depression .just my thoughts and welcome to the site :]

Yes! Your smoking is a problem. I just finished Session Five and Dr Fisher tells you why. You might want to talk to your doctor about quitting. By the time you get to Session Five, Dr Fisher is going to give you some good reasons to quit. Take care. Pecos.
