Lesson 3: Self Talk-The Key to Healthy Self-Esteem
Objective: Recognize that this session is a cornerstone for the rest of the program.

News Flash: A recent report by the editors of Harvard Health Publications stated that repeated scientific studies have linked positive thinking to a greater sense of well-being, improved health and longer life span. The statement, “Your belief is your biology” seems an excellent way to sum up lesson three. We call this a “hinge lesson” because all other teachings and changes in behavior work in conjunction with this foundational principle of Think Better- Feel Better.

So, that’s easy right? Think Better- Feel Better, Think Better- Feel Better, loop the tape… Here’s the difficulty that we all face. Negative thinking is also a bad habit and it takes time and effort to break out of that cycle. Thoughts have pathways in the brain and for us to just jump track out of one path of thinking and hop onto a new thought is like cutting through the jungle with a butter knife. As negative thinkers we need to be taught how to think positively. You will have to practice, practice and practice. Then, in time, negative thoughts and statements will sound like the wrong keys played on a piano.

Creating Mindfulness:
• Take a couple of deep abdominal breaths
• Practice mindfulness by paying attention to and accepting your thoughts without judgment.
• Thoughts are not facts-they are just thoughts. Check them for truth.
• Let the negative thought float by like a cloud passing in the sky or a leaf floating downstream.
• Practice comforting yourself and speaking to yourself like you would a good friend.

Journal Your Journey:
Write down your 5 top negative thoughts that repeat themselves. Then, after each negative write down the positive truth. Carry these truths with you, put them in your phone and read through them several times a day. Be patient. Learning a new language takes time.

This is great news-If we can use this mind body connection in a negative way, we can also use it in a positive way. What might happen if we never again beat ourselves up or criticize ourselves for the way we do things? What might happen if we stopped saying things to ourselves that we would never say to another person? What if we discovered optimism, the silver lining and learned to look for the rainbow? We would soar to levels of great peace and discover the amazing person living inside of us.
