Positive Self Talk, a New Routine

Post by feelingbetter01 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 5:21 pm

I had a decent start to the day today, although I did have a few spontaneous anxiety attacks through the night which disrupted my sleep. I was a little tired but proud of myself for negating my negative thinking. I told myself that thoughts cannot hurt me, I was fine, getting sleep will help me feel better and I distracted myself by counting my blessings. It was hard but effective.

My morning activities well but made up for my rough night. I attended a large social gathering for a good cause and afterward went to lunch with friends. I was nervous, but overall it was a positive experience, motivating and fun. When I got home, though, I fell into a depression. I was alone and started beating myself up for having anxiety. I laid on the couch to feel better, then realized, this IS A ROUTINE! I make myself feel bad so I can wallow in self pity to "feel better". Staying depressed almost feels warm and cozy to me!

I'm beginning to identify my bad habit. Negative thinking is easy, it's falsely comforting to feel sorry for myself, it's an excuse to turn myself off. I started to think about the good things that happened today. I have no good reason to feel depressed. I'm a little tired, but that's all. I got off the couch. I read part of a good book. I decided to write a post. Today, I am changing my routine.

When I saw the subject of this post the word "routine" caught my eye.

Starting a new "routine" is one of the hardest things for us to do.
Our old routine was not healthy. It was making us sick.

Here are some things that may have
been part of your or my old routine:

Dwelling on past mistakes and failures
Setting unrealistic expectations for yourself and others
Continually comparing yourself with others
Avoiding all involvement and responsibility
Remaining negative and problem oriented
Allowing yourself to be controlled by other people and circumstances
Internalizing and personalizing the problems of others
Not forgiving yourself for anything
Seeking isolation and avoiding contact with those who care about you
Doing everything you can to please others
Basing your worth as a person on external things
Seeking lower companions

I have been trying to start a new "routine" for about 8 months now.
I have been learning a lot about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
and what I need to do to keep myself as healthy as I possibly can.
I was in the hospital, then in a Partial Hospitalization Program and
now I am attending classes/workshops/support groups.

I have had a hard time practicing my "coping skills" on a daily basis.
It is a very hard thing to do, starting a new routine.
Everyday I need to be committed to my journaling, my "art therapy",
my "music therapy", my gratitude list, my positive affirmations and reading.

I still don't have a regular daily routine and I got out of the hospital
8 whole months ago. I really need to have a proper bedtime and a proper
time to wake up in the morning. I need to schedule my weekly
activities every Sunday evening so that I know what I will be doing
that week. I need to make sure my Adult Daily Living Skills are
taken care of. Then there are the doctors appointments too.
I don't know how to manage a "balanced" new routine.
I get overwhelmed with the fact that I have so many things to do !

Lynda,

What I find works for me is to focus on those things that you feel are most important. That will help you the most, that will make a positive, encouraging difference in your life. There are so many things to do everyday in our various lives, but if we prioritize what we believe to be most important, I think this will help.

Love these threads. The original post was great. Think at the end of the day, what went wrong? Thats the auto pilo. Think of the positives. Our negative thinking is automatic. Meditating on the positives of our day will circumvent the auto pilot.
